Blob-like growth in Shoebox
    #26945908 - 09/20/20 10:22 AM (3 years, 4 months ago)

What the eff is this thing? Started off white like the surrounding mycelium, has only recently began to change from white -> yellow and is beginning to turn greenish/blue. Day 9 of spawning to bulk. Shoebox tek.

It's likely another competing fungal contaminant and I'll have to chuck the box, but does anyone have experience with this? Separating this one out from my other 2 and seeing how it progresses at the moment, just kind of puzzled with this one.

Are you trying to fruit penis envy (or a variant of it such as APE)? PE varieties can blob, a casing or "pseudo"-casing layer is usually applied to prevent that.

If it isn't a PE variety, hopefully someone can chime in what that might be. A mutant maybe?

It's a 3rd-generation Z-strain variety. MS -> agar -> grain. Pseudo-casing layer qlwas applied. Have done multiple grows with the same batch of MS inoculant to agar, never saw this type of mutant. I'm more concerned about the greening/bluing corner of the yellowish growth. Thanks for your input tho Socrates (:

I haven't fruited any PE type myself, but I think this happens on occasion.  It looks like a Mycogone perniciosa infection, but from what I've see Bod post, it isn't.  So I think it's alright.

Maybe he or someone else will see this and confirm...

Seems like there's not a general consensus on this lil' dude, so I'll grow it out and take notes over the next couple of weeks. I don't intend on consuming fruits whole if any are produced. I'll likely do a 1st flush harvest + boil the fucc out of 'em for some tea if the sub & fruits aren't looking too sketchy. Thanks for the input folks!

Could be Mycelium. I have a mazatapec strain that grows those of multiples throughout the whole tub, the mycelium is just so aggressive, it grows extra brains on top. I'd pluck it off or cut it off with a scalpel to see if it's actually mycelium

Scalpel dissection results...it's a weird mycelial mutant. Like Eclipse stated, my mycelium's got some big brain energy 🧠

Pics to demonstrate this point:

#1 - No signs for pores/gills/slime inside of this mass that would indicate a foreign fruiting body. Pretty obvious it's a dense mat of mycelium on this brain-ball.

#2 - compressed outer shell that was bluing is slightly concerning. Possible contaminant living on the outside of the mycelial ball? Probably not, but maybe.

#3 - scraped the blue section onto scalpel...doesn't have a different smell as compared to the mycelial ball. It all smells like cubes. The reason why it's bluing on the outer shell? Idk, maybe the mycelium is just so damn aggressive that it requires more humidity/water than its surrounding mycelial network? The bluing is probably our favorite fungal compound

#4 - interior of the cross section. Still looks good. No visible signs of competing bacteria or other contams.

#5 - waited 20 mins to view the cross section to see if the mycelium would blue and indicate the presence of actives. BOOYAH BABY. Look at that beautiful blue gradient! It's frickin cube myc.

I think we're all good here my dudes. There are 2 other smaller mycelial balls forming in the same tub, I'm going to let those grow out and see what happens. Will let this tub continue and harvest it's fruits

If it's the ksss from my giveaway, then it seems to have spread through spore print.
I just posted this in another thread about the ksss culture that was used in that giveaway before the fuckyness started

Bod's thread is valid but I still err on the side of contamination by bacteria
or possibly even mycophage.

I had a ksss clone that started doing shit like that and i was never able to
separate whatever caused it from the myc.

These tubs are from before the contamination got into the culture:

And these are from after the contam got in:

Same culture only 2 grow cycles apart from eachother. I'm still trying to save
that culture and it's been a year nearly.

If I hadnt watched the change in that culture with my own eyes, I may be more
inclined to think it is just a natural pheno. That definitely isnt the case here

Crazy. Is it possible for a competitor mold to transfer through spore print?
This makes me think it may be viral. Definitely not just a normal pheno cause it
trashed my culture.

That's what I thought!  I'd be interested to see what Bodhi says about it, it was his post that lead me to believe it wasn't Mycogone perniciosa.

Do you think the viral pathogen has permanently altered your strain's DNA, and that's why it's being passed down through generations? Or is the virus just hitching a ride on the spores themselves?

Truuuuue, thanks for mentioning that thread earlier! Reading through that gave me the vote of confidence I needed to investigate further. Happy I didn't chuck this tub in the compost pile. Got a valuable learning experience out of it too
