Is it normal for pinning to occur below the top layer of mycelium 1

This tub was cased with peat/verm (balanced with hydrated lime) and the mycelium colonized the entire casing. It is now starting to pin but all the pins are forming below the surface of the mycelium and a few (not too many) poking through the top surface. The spores were isolated on agar, but not really well so these tubs contain many strains.
Three questions: is it normal for pinning to occur beneath the top layer of mycelium?
Is it normal for multi strain tubs to have some pins appear first and then the other strains pin slightly later (as per their individual genetics)
Third question: Should I pick the largest mushroom to clone to agar and then grain? As I will be away for 3 months is it ok to take this clone to grain and then store this colonized grain in the fridge?

Very good questions, I cannot help you but I want to follow this thread as I have very similar questions to you. Hopefully someone more skilled than me can give you answers. I assume you clone the biggest mushroom as long as it came from a spot with lots of mushrooms but I have no experience with that, just my assumption!

First: try and get some more pics uploaded. It really helps with getting questions answered.
As to the query: Yes, pinset in an MS culture can be spotty and/or not uniform. Just let it do its thing. The pins are likely forming just above the main colony, inside the casing, which is normal.
As to the cloning question: At this stage in your game, get a clean clone, first and foremost. There are traits to look for, a lot of it is personal and/or experience based, and over time you'll have a grasp on what that means to you. In the mean time, take a clone from the big one. Take a clone from a cluster, take a clone from a retarded one, take a clone from a fabulously average one. Take a bunch. Practice. Experiment. Play. Just try not to get bogged down with a ton of projects, thus leaving no time for anything of substance. I've been there before.
Keep it simple. Keep it clean. Keep it fun.
All good things, in all good time...

Wonderful! Thank you so much for your advice. I am quite new to mushroom cultivation, (I have experience with aseptic technique though so that helped a lot). This is my first grow and so far not too many hiccups. A big learning experience. Thank you for confirming my suspicions about the uneven pin formation and the location of pin formation. I think I cased this a bit too early when the mycelium while having fully colonized the substrate was still in a state of vegetative growth and when the casing was added it just colonized it completely. I think next time I will colonize it to 100%, put in fruiting and wait for half a week before adding the casing in order to better utilize the casing for its purpose (microclimate for pins/knotting) and to get a more even pinset. I will play around with clones, take them to grain and store them in the fridge, when I return next year should experiment with them. Thank you very much for your answer. I look forward to one day being a genuine contributor to this forum!

Very good advice FlufferNutter. I am in the EXACT same situation as sbulking. My casing was fully colonized too and pins seem to be forming under the top layer of mycelium. What a learning experience but one of the best hobbies I have ever encountered! I hope to do a write up of my learning from my first grow soon (once I have a few flushes) have the forum point out the errors of my thinking and embark as a better cultivator.

Keep up the enthusiasm! Stick to tried and true teks but definitely try your hand at different ones, even on a small scale. Its valuable experience. Learning how various climate manipulation techniques work first hand is priceless(especially the ones by guys still active here). I doubt I have to say to OBSERVE. I feel like everybody is a full on helicopter cultivator at the start and some, like me, never get over it. Lol. It's definitely hard sometimes not to overthink what you're looking at, which may be for the first time in a lot of instances. The most important thing is relax and have fun with it! You're not going to reinvent the wheel, focus on killing the basics in your sleep. Leave the gimmicks to the YouTube hucksters. I fully endorse trying your hand at all the cool ways its been done, the legit ones that is, and just get comfortable with the endeavor... It's fun, and before you know it you'll be simultaneously questioning the amount of sterilite and pyrex you currently own, and buying more because "That tub shape looks good..hmm jars on sale..." lmao
Welcome to the most addicting hobby you'll ever have!

I sort of went from the mushroom cultivator and did what made sense. So far reasonably successful but MANY things to optimize!
