Air particle meter/reading (PM2.5)??

How relevant is an air particle meter reading when doing lab work? (ie. agar, g2g, etc.)
I ask because they work on different principles and my flowhood shows 1.0 or less and my SAB is 17.0-23.0 on the PM 2.5 setting.

You can just test your hood by making a plate and hold it up in front of the hood when running. In you SAB you can do a blank plate transfer like a regular one. Making a NTC plate works just fine. You don't really need anything else to tell you if your air flow is clean your agar will tell you that.
In generel you dont need any electric components to help you grow mushrooms.

I get what you're saying but air quality varies day to day and even min to min and testing on agar plates does not provide real time results. What could be good air quality one day could be terrible the next especially in SAB situations.

You can’t use particle counter in an SAB. Particle counters draw in air, defeating the “still air” of your SAB.
When it comes to testing sterile areas, particle counts are only one of many criteria used to determine effectiveness. Unless you’re doing a full suite of tests, (air flow velocities/volumes, filter leak tests, particle counts, smoke studies, viable counts) the information you get from a single test is close to meaningless.
Are you having contamination issues you’re trying to troubleshoot?

I can tell you this. Tens of thousands of people had success with a SAB and never even considering a particle meter.

Thanks for the input guys. I fully understand flow hoods and SABs work on entirely different principles and air particulates are only one variable.
I guess i am trying to avoid potential contams as i have been getting some in my LCs and some in my agar. I wouldnt say they are high rates by any means. I an starting to suspect its the vacuum created when opening the LC solution for inoculation with agar.
I dont have access to my flowhood at all times because it located elsewhere and I want to make sure i can use my SAB when needed.

When making liquid culture, I always use wide mouth pint jars and turn the lid upside down so I don't have any trouble with the seal. Wedge goes in and no more opening after that.

What's with this shitty trend all the kids making LC's with unmodded lids?
It's asking for trouble unless you have a proper sterilizer capable of holding a vacuum until you open it in front of a hood. Is it that hard to put a filter on the lid? Mind you, you don't even need a watman filter, polyfil will make a wonderful job if you stuff it right.

I have since flipped the lids. I was using tyvek for filters but it still created enough vacuum pressure to suck air in (so likely didnt work). I made a bunch of these unfortunately. I have an aversion to poly but will definitely consider using it.

SFD's are good too if you have them. I used to use them whole for LC.
