Yellow bright sponge on mycelium
    #26943486 - 09/19/20 03:08 AM (3 years, 4 months ago)

My first attempt at brf cakes was going pretty well until I harvested my first flush and noticed some bright yellow sponge substance on the mycelium. I’ve searched for what it might be but I’m at a loss.

Please can someone tell me if this is a contamination or a mycelium defence?

I'm a complete noob, so take what I say with a grain of salt, and defiantly get a second opinion.

From my understanding though, metabolites released by the mycelium to battle contamination will be in liquid form, and thus will appear as either a yellow stain on the mycelium, or if a lot is released, as an actual liquid "slime". It can look pretty similar to bacteria if it's allowed to pool up like this though, so it can be hard to tell sometimes.

Your yellow spots don't look anywhere close to being a "liquid" though. Instead, it looks fluffy and more like a yellow colored mold. I haven't ever heard of yellow mold though. Regardless, it doesn't look like metabolites to me, but I may be wrong. I'd keep an eye on it to see if it spreads. If it gets noticeably worse or changes color, toss it.

Thanks MikeSelium very sound advice. I used a blade and it came off quite easily, hoping it’s all good. I’ve dunked them so time will tell if it will come back in force.

It's irrelevant what kind of yellow stuff is on the cake, if it's something bad then that's that, just keep fruiting the cskes until the substrates are spent. But from the looks of those cakes you seem to have bigger issue with aborting pins due to inadequate fruiting conditions so contams aren't really the problem here.

Also none of the photos are focused so it's not visible what's going on on the surface try taking better pics like this:
