Mushrooms with similar growing conditions to cubes
    #26942930 - 09/18/20 06:13 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Hi all. The wife doesn't like the idea of me growing cubes at home but has totally given me the green light to grow legal mushies because I really do enjoy the hobby!

I'd still like to hone my skills in the direction of cubes though in case that day ever comes. I know oysters are commonly recommended, but what else? Might as well have a variety!

Don't go with oysters, they're nothing like cubes to grow.

Try king oysters in monotubs.  Or A. aegerita/black poplar.  They look like cubes and are fun to grow.  I think they'd do well in monotubs as well.

Thanks! Me too lol. It seems these just grow very slowly. That big one has taken a week to get to where it is. Still growing, day by day. Hoping some of the others perk up when I harvest the big ones.

Thanks! Yes, I used all cube teks! Which is probably all the mushies in the middle appear to be aborting haha. I guess these guys like a bit more air and cooler temps than cubes.

I'm using pasty's ez dialed tubs with the 2 extra optional holes drilled. Went agar to oats to coir/verm!

I know man, too many mushies is a real issue haha. I mean, you could share them with friends

Nah, king oysters just do that.  They always pin way more mushrooms than they can support.  Be glad so many abort or you wouldn't get any bigger ones.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback!! Now I feel a little better about my grow

I was wondering why I saw people growing these out of narrow neck vases. Now I know why, limits the surface area for only the big boys.

I’m glad to find this. I’ve had the same question and use the same technique. I’ll try something other than kings since you’ve already given that a whirl. If something works then I’ll post back.
