Anybody here have a 3d printer? (or laser engraver, or other modern artsy-fartsy doohickey) 1

I'm thinking about buying one. I'm still researching, but the Prusa Mini looks like a decent machine near the top end of my budget 180mm cube printspace, can print in multiple materials, self leveling bed, etc. Seems pretty nice.
Mostly I just want to print stuff for myself, but maybe also as a small side hustle printing keychains at the flea market or something when this plague blows over.

I've got 2 Ender 3's. I bought one and it was so good I needed another for when it's in use. Both have been upgraded with a glass bed and all metal hotend. I've got ~$250 into each of them at this point, but I've been able to print PLA, PETG, ABS, and nylon without much issue. I do run them in an enclosure though, and I do run a small space heater when doing nylon or ABS. PETG seems to do just about anything I'd need ABS for, and prints easier, with the exception of anything I may want to do some acetone smoothing on.

Sure, not a ton, but I'm not actively trying to. I've had a few people ask me to make different things for them, and print time/filament is pretty cheap really. The one thing I always say is I don't think I've saved money or made money by having a 3d printer, but I have a lot of cool shit I wouldn't have otherwise.
I'm also into DIY shit, so they really come in handy for that, particularly when some stupid plastic part/clip breaks.

I do have some other skills that could mesh well with 3d printing. Electro-mechanical would be the main one; robotics and shit. I've written some software for animatronics and motor control.
I think I could pull off a 3d photobooth if I could find a replacement for 123d catch. I'm sure something will come along eventually, if it hasn't already.

Rule number 1 for buying something like this and hoping to make money, already know the product you are going to sell.
I own a machine shop, I make stuff all of the time, but if I didn't have a clear path for recouping my initial investment I would have been fucked from the get go.

I would agree if the decision is based entirely on the hope of making money. I'm mostly into it as a hobby, but if it leads to something more, that's cool too.
In fact, that's kind of why I'm just now getting into it. I've wanted one for a while, but couldn't justify the cost. It's reached the point now where the cost of a good low-ish end machine is low enough and the quality high enough to spend the money for just farting around.

Then you have a realistic outlook I would say.
Getting into CNC is a great skill to know, even just for fun. That said, basic button pusher jobs, where you basically load the machine with stock and hit go, will pay $20 or more an hour. If you learn to use CAD/CAM and can work in g-code pretty well then you can make a lot more money than that. One of the problems with 3d printing however is that additive manufacturing still isn't even remotely used for much of anything. Yes there are use cases, but largely, it's used for fun and/or visual prototyping. There are exceptions, I ran a carbon fiber prints where they fiber was laid in nylon. Those prints were actually structural/functioning parts.
I own CNC vertical milling machines, one CNC lathe, a CNC laser, and am working on more machine tools. We will see how the market goes... I started because I wanted to make parts for myself (that had a potential base for sale) and that has grown over the years. CNC is really fun if you have a mind for it, but it's also continuously challenging.

I've had classes on CAD, but we never did any CAM. I bought a mini-lathe several years back which I planned to retrofit with CNC, but I never got around to it. I originally bought it to make pipes because I have a friend who owns a head shop. That never went anywhere. Making pipes on a lathe manually is a pain in the balls, and I couldn't get enough for them to make it worth the trouble, and I just didn't see me getting the volume to make it worth retro-fitting it. I still have the lathe and use it once in a blue moon.
I have actually made some ceramic pipes for him that sold pretty well, but the process was tedious, and the work not worth what I could get for them wholesale. I do have some mold making skill. If I ever did design something that I could sell, chances are I would just make a mold from a printed prototype, and then cast the product.
So what do you make, mostly? Industrial parts? I'm definitely more into the artsy-fartsy than industrial engineering type stuff, even though that's what I actually went to school for.

You have a good taste of what you are getting into then. 3d printers are god awful slow, but you don't have to do much after you figure out how to get good prints. For 3d printing you will be "slicing" which is a pretty easy form of CAM. You may know that, if so, I apologize.
Making pipes on a manual machine indeed would be a tough process. Not that they are hard to make, but the return would be abysmal. China, Taiwan, Thailand, own those types of markets these days. My weed grinder is sweet, it cost $15. I could not replicate the machining/finish quality in my shop for less than like $50.
I make race car and specialty motorcycle parts. Very niche type stuff, but I've done well.

I'd probably need a resin printer for that, but they do have those in my price range. I could go that way. The process is a lot dirtier, as in handling toxic chemicals, and the material is quite a bit more expensive, but the resolution is much higher.
Do you know what kind of printer your friend used?

Geez, the finishing, yeah. I even bought an anodizing kit, but there's no point anodizing unless it has a mirror finish.
I have enough knowledge of CAM to get what you're saying. I've operated a CNC mill and a lathe. My final project in machine shop class was an air powered planetary gear motor. Everything had already been designed, and the CAM work done. We pretty much just set up the machines, watched them while they did their thing and finished the parts. Crashed a spindle on the mill once. I've seen g-code, and understood enough programming to get a general idea of what was going on in it.

Is that additive, or subtractive printing?
THe first project after just farting around with whatever random bullshit just to learn how to operate it will be a "laser" pistol for an animatronic shooting game I've been working on. I have a prototype made just from pvc pipe. Kind of like a potato gun, but with an ir led and a lens instead of a grill igniter and a potato. IR sensors detect when a target is hit, which signals a character to go into it's little dance, or whatever. When I get all that working, I'm going to want a nicer gun for it. this piece of shit has a limit switch zip tied to it, and it casts a beam several inches wide, and also a huge ring of light from the IR reflecting off the sides of the PVC. What I want is a nice tight cone with about a 2 inch diameter at 6-8 feet range. Just something I rigged up for testing, which has served its purpose.

We have a Prusa and Ultimaker 3 at work
I know a lot of 3d print enthusiasts. I think you can forget about making money (real money) unless you invest a professional machine park.
But for messing around its great fun
I would recommend Onshape as a cad program. Its free if you are willing to share parts with the community
A pro account in about $1800 a year
According to my R&D peeps the best feature of the Ultimaker is the ability to print support structures in a water-solvable material. Saves the hassle of cutting and trimming a bunch of supports.
The Prusa was €700 and the Ultimaker €3000. Both have had epic failures resulting in molten filament tumors destroying fragile components. Ultimaker is very plug and play

I'll give Onshape a look. Fusion 360 is $300 a year, or one free year for personal use. TinkerCAD is free, but pretty basic.
The only way I could see making anything that could call itself "real money" would be if I were getting paid for design work (CAD files), and including a plastic replica of the final part just for fit testing and checking for assembly issues, etc.
The 3d printer at school could do the water-suluble stuff.

Fusion is probably the best with included CAM. I don’t know that the OnShape has CAM in the free version? It didn’t use to but it’s been a few years since I looked at it.
I’ve been paying for Fusion for a while. I have a lot of mixed feelings on their recent change to subscription policy. They are fucking the little guys for sure. That said, I don’t make enough to justify Solidworks and a CAM package so Fusion is still the best deal going.
You can of course always sail the seven seas. For hobbyists I see no problem with that.

I've been watching this guy's videos on youtube, and he just posted a video about changes with Fusion, and goes over some alternatives for people doing 3d printing.
I'll probably just be screwing around with TinkerCAD for quite a while, and maybe Blender. I've used it some to get some stuff printed through Shapeways in the past. They've made some improvements in the last few years to accommodate 3d printing. I'll have to check out the latest version and see what's new.
There are some free "CAM" programs out there for 3d printers. Cura and PrusaSlicer are the main two, as far as I can tell.
