Buying agar trays

I am a senior undergrad, and my university has a program for grad students in research groups to put a request in through email to buy tons of agar trays for dirt cheap. It is so cheap that it is cheaper than buying the ingredients and making them all which I have never done.
Anyway I know its a stupid idea, but do you think I could buy some from them with the right excuse? If so what would you use as an excuse? I was thinking being honestish and saying cloning oysters or shiitake from the store for food, but I'm worried that would be to obvious.

Nobody knows you are doing anything wrong until you say you are. Tell them you are culturing yeast or something for brewing, or the first thing you said culturing oysters. The school more than likely has more to worry about than you culturing edible mushrooms.

By agar trays you mean pre-made I assume? Or do you mean just the petri's by themselves? If it's petri's by themselves then go for it but if it's pre-made I would suggest to just make your own, as you don't know the amount of ingredients they put into the agar.
If you've never tried agar before I suggest starting with no-pour because it's easier.
But if you intend to get them you could always just say you are intending to get into studying bacteria. But your excuse works to. Just say you want to grow your own food. People buy hydroponic setups all the time but doesn't mean they are growing weed everytime, just most of the time

Agreed, and yea its probably better to just buy the ingredients, agar is cheap, lme is cheap, and water is basically free. And as stated before if you are buying pre poured plates you can't mess with nutrients or hardness, not worth it imo.

Its filled. Their default is called Luria Broth with/without Ampicillin. But they customize however. The yeast idea is good, I think I will go with that

Total noob here, but I bought a ton of LB agar plates.
Did a ton of transfers to them, and the mycelium all stalled or died.
My MEA self poured agar plates grew beautifully. But I wasted a ton of time and money with the LB agar plates.

Premade shit typically is premade shit.
Always make your own.
