Immature Lion’s Mane?
    #26941067 - 09/17/20 05:16 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Habitat:
Growing in numerous similarly sized spots along a long since downed tree trunk, with no bark, at the margins of a creek bed in central Ohio.

Gills:
Not apparent

Stem:
Not apparent

Cap:
?

Spore print color:
N/A

Bruising:
“Spines”? Soft to the touch seemingly damaged in the process.

Other information:
I’d love to go back to see how quickly it grows, if it is Lion’s Mane, and get a specimen on agar.
Thanks!

These 5 are from another park, a different day, all on decaying wood.

Edit: The very last brown cluster photo was not on wood. They were everywhere in the grass at the edge of the trees. Lining the entire way.

i think there are quite a few puff ball type mushrooms that could look like that early on. have you seen them mature in your area?

I only saw them on this tree, and this seemed the furthest developed.

Yes the white ball. Is lions mane. It could get bigger. But it could also start to brown in a couple days.  Want to get them completely white. Though you can cut out the browned areas

Others, even smaller, had browned already.
This was by the creek at the disc golf course.
I’ll head back tomorrow!
Thanks.

Could it be Postia ptychogaster?

The others are Mycena haematopus, Mycena, Agaricales and Lacrymaria lacrymabunda.

I’ll use it as an excuse to get back out there and get more pictures of this one and the other specimens that have begun darkening.

I’m not certain of what spines are, hence the question mark.
Was trying to described what seem like short felt like hair.

I left it where it was and the area I touched was the only area that didn’t change color.

Others along the log

Seing as it wasn’t Lion’s Mane, this specimen found today is the most visually interesting in my opinion. Growing, at eye level, 6’ on a standing dead tree.

Should I make an effort to get it to someone capable of doing that?
