Sailing upon the ocean

What does a person do when they spend their life looking for a purpose only to find that it is made and not discovered. Do they stay on the beach and try to make a sand castle or brave the uncharted waters?
If that was too obscure I'll say it like this then. What is someone to do when they spent their life trying to do the correct thing only to find there is no correct thing and then wondering what to do with life.

Perhaps the xhange you seek only requires a temporary effort, like dropping a rock in a stream to change the flow in an area.
Perhaps also you should share your more specific thoughts. What meaning do you personally pursue and what conundrum do you face? That will help us provide more specific advice, if advice is what you seek.

i don't know, what do you do when you are convinced that your entire family has sold their soul to the devil and are FUBAR beyond talking about the dog, or killing the dog and getting a new one, and then killing that one for whatever FUBAR reason, and are periodically trying to kill you perhaps to collect a bounty?
i suggest it's very rare to find a situation with all things fair. maybe there is no higher moral scale keeping balance, maybe it's just laws to try and support an economy for human trafficking. who knows.
what would you do if you were rich and unlimited? and no one's opinion really mattered and you weren't obligated to please anyone? do you think that terrorists honestly want to kill people or if they were rich and spoiled they wouldn't think twice about hitting the snooze button or jacking off again instead of blowing something up.
maybe you have an idea for the future and could join a group that wants to manifest it, or teach some youth about something that could help them.
sry, i'm not meaning to sound like a jerk i'm just like that.

Well without becoming more poetic.
In life I followed the standard model: school, work, try to get a partner, then graduate, get a job, marry, house. Lots of stuff went differently through that to the point that now I realize that is someone else's dream and not mine. Now I don't know what to do without some solid core plan for how to live life, let alone if there is a plan for life.
I try to imagine what I would do if I had all the money in the world, but I get nothing. I honestly wouldn't know what to do with any of it. It's as though I'm a doll that has lost the main program and has nothing inside to guide it.

We are spaghetti, and soup, but also just noodles and broth, but neither spaghetti while still being noddles, and neither broth but still sauce.
I get it.

As much as I like the man as a person I can't really get behind Alan Watts. As far as I know, and anyone else, I am a sack of flesh like the rest of us.

69 is always the range. Unless it's 420, or spaghetti.

I feel you brother. I did exactly the same. Had the wife, dog, white picket mortgage and great job in the city. Then it all went to shit over a period of about six months in 2015 and I spent years at the bottom of a bottle and wandering the planet lost, broken, and shellshocked, wondering what the fuck had just happened to the man I once knew.
The realisation that I had followed the culturally programmed dream rather than my own was a whole 'nother shock to the system when I realised it years later.
Find your cause. Find your raison d'etre. It is - as you well know - different for each of us.
But should you not be grateful for realising this?
I know I am.

I will say that Watts has a beautiful speaking voice even if I don't agree with him.
I will say it is great to know this, well great-ish. Realizing I was living someone else's life was good. But now I also realize I don't have a life of my own. Guess I'll have to work out what to do next.

Fair enough, I'll take your word for it. Though considering I've never fought for anything in my life I'm in for rough waters ahead, though the prospect is somewhat exciting. I feel slightly giddy.
Off topic, what exactly does your sig mean?

It means that I feel that this existence is an illusion, and that we - as humans - tend to take this whole fucking gig waaaaaaaaaay too seriously the vast majority of the time.

Think of the Buddhist concept of 'not-self', if you're at all familiar with it.

Familiar; yes.
Understood? Not at all. The only thing I really understood with some degree of confidence is impermanence. Not-self caused me a lot of confusion and grief.

I'm not sure I will. Just when they start to get me there they lose me. Like you are a father until your kids die or you die, you are a lawyer until you quit, it's like you pick up an identity and then you leave it. So when they mean you are nothing it's not that you don't exist or aren't real but rather than there is no enduring thing about you that defines you. I think. When I first read it the advice was not the best thing in the world for a high schooler finding their way.
But I take everything seriously: the wind, the waves, the grass, the birds, the rocks, sun, heat, cold, all of it. It means quite a deal to me, the wilds.

It's just that some of his videos are based on a misinterpretation of some sciences. Though that video on what is meaning (previous page) is one of the good ones. It's about just seeing the meaning in the hippo as it is and not where it can take you or as a means to an end. There is nowhere to go, you are already there. It reminds me of my walks. I'm walking but I'm not going anywhere. I walk, explore, take it in. I might want to see what's over there or someplace I've never been or who knows. It's both carefree and serious, but it's fun too.
Ok I guess I was a bit hasty. Some of his stuff is good, some I don't quite jive with. He did a talk about career that I found illuminating.
But my question for you, which is what I asked Buddhists about no self, is how does one have compassion for others or celebrate with them if there is "nobody" (like in the thread about tyrranical being married this long).

LOL, that's easy; you just have to come to the point of realisation that THEY'RE ALL fighting the same hard battle you are.
We all struggle the same, no matter what we are. Therefore; they (you) are all my brothers and sisters.
My fellow __________, fighting the same hard struggle that I am.
From that, unconditional love and compassion.
Don't be so serious.
