An interesting dilemma for The Pub! *poll included* 1

Quote:
You meet a guy who has way too much money and who is in a good mood. This guy lays out a thousand dollars on the table before you:

He says: "see that? a thousand dollars! I'm going to make you a winning proposal, and that is to choose between two options I give you. Think about this closely and then do what you feel like doing. There is NO catch - Either way I keep my promise. Its a very good day for me and you are in luck. See these $1000? Now think and choose:
1) you pick the $1000 off the table and keep it for yourself. We shake hands, I buy you a drink, it's fine.
2) you name me a registered charitable organisation of your choice. These will then be given $1000 by me, on behalf of you. But: if you do this I in addition will give you $900 which you can keep for yourself. We shake hands, I buy you a drink, it's fine.
So, either you walk away with $1000 for yourself or you walk away with $900 for yourself, but in the latter case the registered charity of your choice gets $1000, because of you settling for one Benjamin ($100 bill) less.
There is NO catch, choose what YOU want, and tell me your choice.
Tell the answer both in the poll and in your reply. If you go the charity roupte, please state and maybe link and speak in favor of, that charity. If you don't go the charity route but instead take $100 extra for yourself, please tell us why.
Either way you can tell us what you'll do with the money, be it $1000 or $900

The charity is a gofundme page for me.
If that's not an option then probably something to feed people in America or towards some kind of alternative unsubsidized drug rehab program that helps people get off hard drugs.

Since this is shroomery.. a charity like MAPS (no affiliation or preference) could use the money to possibly help others.
Even if it’s one person.. gotta do it.
Taking the full grand only helps yourself. Helping others —> helps society as a whole —> eventually comes full circle and helps everyone including yourself.

I choose both pills: take all the money, burn all the money, go straight to people that need help and teach them to fish, forage, farm and hunt their own food.

It would be interesting to see the percentage that prefers to make a small sacrifice for a greater good, as opposed to the percentagewho says "No, I'd want all of that $1000"
Not to judge, for all we know the $1000 guy has eaten nothing but ramen for 3 weeks. Or, maybe they dont believe in charities nut in hands on helping.
Its just, how would the split be.
How would the split be between these options? Who goes left, who goes right?

As for me,
There are very many underfunded African orphanages, "discovered" by a tourist who then sets up a little registered charity website, where the money goes straight to the wellbeing of perhaps 2 or 3 dozen kids. Those sites are all over the web and the legit ones are registered. I'd have the good benefactor donate $1000 to one such grassroots orphanage charity.
I'd invest the $900 in home improvement, such as extra thermal insulation, that nets a gain.

Option 2 is obviously a win-win and $100 lost is for most people a small price to pay.
Now multiply the stakes and increase the delta and maybe we have conundrum.
$200k to walk away with vs. $200k to charity of choice and $150k to walk away with. Now that is an inflation adjusted question.
I would still take option 2
Related question: does shroomery count as as charity?

I already did this with the first stimulus check, donated the 1200 to a local charity. Then at the beginning of this month my friends asked me to dogsit at their house. Though they didn't need to, they wrote me a check for 200 dollars, I told them I probably wouldn't cash it, bbut when I got home I had a better idea. I deposited the check, then donated the total amount to a local shelter for abused women.
I am lucky to be able to do this cause I make a decent living, I can see how others would clearly keep the cash.

What even is this thread, lol. It's philosophically impotent. It's "are you good or are you greedy." Except fhe good guy has to get paid. Where is the "I don't want the money." See if you don't take the money the guy is going to give it to someone else. That is as charitable as it gets. The other option is to take the $1000 and keep $500, donating $500 because if you're telling me what to do with a supposed gift it's not a gift nor is it my choice. Vicarious altruism isn't altruism it's a mail-order participation trophy

It's set up so that it's a relatively minor sacrifice to pick the altruistic option, yet there will still be some people who don't.

I voted the $1000 US dollars to charity choice with $900 for myself (an excellent deal). I once donated to an African-based Charity because they need it the most (in my opinion).

I think giving money to a religious establishment or charity is a waste. It's well known that most charities use the majority for expenses to get the rest of your money where it needs to go.
You're better off taking the hour or two to buy things people need and distrubuting yourself.

It's only $100 difference for you...
...why not donate the money? It could literally come back to haunt YOU quite easily if you didn't...the difference 1k can make somewhere in the world is VERY LARGE...it could easily screw you over in some random way later in YOUR life if you took all the money for yourself...
...yea, anything could happen and maybe donating the money might actually screw you over in some way but obviously the chances of that happening SHOULD be MUCH less than the opposite ending up true...
...it sucks not knowing of any good charities but they ARE out there...
Honestly I'd want to donate that $900 to a charity as well so all $1,900 went to charity...
...and I'll continue my life learning how to fish rather than taking so much fish for free from this rich man.
Kids need us man...you don't give a starving kid a fishing pole when you could give him a fish instead, that's like a slap in the face to a kid at an orphanage or something...you have to trust that somehow the world is going to pitch in alongside you to keep that kid fed until he builds his own fishing pole and learns to fish...that's what humble souls are doing in orphanages around the world.
...yea, you would like to give him that fishing pole as well...so do it...
I've been looking for good charities to donate to and I feel really lost looking through organizations that are so large and not knowing exactly how to verify and find the small ones.
Please, LET ME KNOW SOME GOOD ONES Asante! Much love.

A good one's in my signature and has been for years now AMANI
They're a lot expanded since I first posed the link but, they got a routine and good capability for rescuing street children in Tanzania.
They have legit fundraising branches now in many rich countries over the world, all thanks to what once started as a simple internet campaign.
Its still about a few dozen orphans and homeless kids, but a few dozen more than before.

Ya give the 1k to charity. Both cases is money for nothing. And an extra hundred wouldn't make that much of a difference. Change the question to 10k and 1k and then it'll be a tougher choice

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Psalm 12:6 The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. Revelation 3:11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

I redid the same poll on the African Internet, in a format that made sense locally. While these people are mostly considerably poor, every single one of the vote was towards getting $100 less so that those who had it worst got $1000 to help them.
