Grow bag ready to fruit?
    #26939014 - 09/16/20 01:07 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Got this 5lb all-in-one bag with 1lb of grain and 4lb of coco substrate. Inoculated over a month ago and mixed the grains and substrate, all went well. I mixed it up again 2 weeks ago at about 80% colonization.

I'm wondering if it's time to fruit? The brick inside the bag is solid, pulls away from the sides and bottom of the bag with ease. There's also some moisture at the bottom of the bag, though no pinning from what I can see. It's looked and felt the same for about 4-5 days. I've kind of been waiting for some mycelium to cover the dark spots more but it hasn't happened.

Any tips?

To fruit, I plan on placing the brick in a monotub with perlite at the bottom and a layer of foil, misting a couple times daily.

Just not 100% sure what I should be looking for regarding time to fruit. If I'm waiting for every bit of coir to be covered in mycelium it might take a few weeks...or may have to break up and mix in the bag again.

If I'm waiting for pinning, maybe a few more days.

If I'm waiting for the contents of the bag to become a solid brick, it's been that way for about 2 weeks.

From what I see in the bag there, I would just wait it out. Don't break it up and mix it again. Just let it do its thing. Patience is key

Anything specific I should be looking for to fruit? And just to emphasize the pooling water here's a pic:

The water is slightly brown, likely from the coco. Not sure if I should put the bag on it's side or anything else to attempt to get rid of the water.

I don't want to lose it due to the water. There's no other signs of contams and it smells good now. It smells better than some gourmet mushrooms I have ground up

After you start to see pinning you’d want to put it in a clear storage bin with perlite and water at the bottom, separating it with foil

So the pooling water isn't an issue? I'd rather fruit now than get contaminates, if that makes sense

edit: it's hard to get a picture, but the tops look much more colonized than the sides do.

I ended up fruiting it in a monotub on perlite and foil. No pins yet. The pooling water was covering the bottom 1/5th of the brick after 1 more night, felt fruiting would be safer

Here it is fruiting. (it's upside down from how it was in the bag)

It's been 4 days and I'm not noticing much of a change. There was knotting on what is now the bottom of the brick when I took it out the bag.

Totally understand if It's my fault and I fruited too early but I just really don't know what to look for in these all in one bag cakes lol. growth might be stalled? should I get it out of the sunlight?

IMO you should not strip the whole bag until you have good sized pins at least (if you remove it from the bag at all).  If you're waiting for pins with the bag completely stripped you're going to have trouble keeping enough moisture so I hope your fruiting chamber is good.

I guess the FC has been sufficient (been misting ~3 times a day), noticed pins a few hours ago:

For future reference/for the lurkers, ideally I should've left it in the bag until there were pins - I'm wondering about the pooling water though, should that have been ignored and I got lucky to get pins? Or did I do the right thing to almost panic when the water level kept rising every time I checked? Or should the pooling water just be monitored for any discolorations?

I'd say it's somewhat normal, pretty hard to tell whether it's metabolites or just condensed water from the insides of the bag.  In most cases I don't worry about it too much.
