Spore syringe to agar, is antibiotics needed?
    #26940650 - 09/17/20 12:43 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Quick question to the group, is it recommended to use antibiotic agar for spore syringe to agar. From my research I’m thinking yes but I would like some more opinions about it.

Nope! If there is anything present on your dish besides the cubensis spores, we want them to germinate so that we can see them and transfer away from them.

antibiotics are seldom used in amateur mycology. if you run into serious contam issues, most people just start over from spore rather than try to save cultures.

I like to use it as little as possible. I mainly use antibiotic agar for wild prints and clones, and also all of my wedges I use for grain or whatever are on antibiotic agar just in case.

Agar itself is pretty perfect for cleaning up cultures. Unless the syringe is super bacterial, it isn't needed.

Also, and I'm not sure of this, but I think if you use it too often, for every plate and transfer, you could potentially get some bacteria that are immune to it.

Thank you for your responses. So if there is contamination’s present just transfer like I would if it was spore print to agar until it’s clean
