In what year did you hook up to the Internet?

I dabbled with a C64 in the early 80s, wrote some simplistic programs in BASIC as a kid, skipped the 90s but actually got connected to the Internet on my own computer in the year 2000.

1997, my freshman year of college. I recall having to physically go to building to register for my school-based email account. As in, it was optional and you didn't really need it.

1999, my parents got a computer with a modem and I initially was using one of those free internet services with the ad banner. NetZero I think. A few months later we got 1 Mbps DSL. At school I would have used the internet first in something like 1996.

1992 I used pine as a freshmen in college to email friends at other schools By the time I graduated college in 1997 I had geocities a site with my resume published as a web page which pretty much got me hired at my first job. My first home connection to the internet was 1998 with a gateway pc and aol dialup.

I had a vic20, commodore 64 and a few others growing up but those were unconnected. I used to be mad as a kid that mom got us the vic20 and c64 instead of the atari we wanted, in hindsight I am thankful she did.

I got on a couple BBSs sometime around 92, with a Commodore. There were ascii/petscii issues, but it worked, more or less.
I had a roommate who I think had real internet in 93. I think I used someone's earthlink account between 94 and 96 in 97 I moved back in with my parents and they had a local isp.

i guess it depends on what you would consider the "internet". If BBS counts, then like 88-89 for me. Pops was a fairly large hardware / software reviewer and we were some of the first people to hop onto AOL (anyone remember the mosaic web browswer) and the GE service GEnie. It probably wasnt until like 91-92 that we had a dial in ISP to use for internet though.
thanks for reminding me what an old fuck i am.

AOL dial-up, i think 1998 or 1999. my mom refused to buy an account because she thought the internet was unsafe so i used every promotional AOL cd I could get my hands on until I made a GUEST account on one of her friends AOL and I was able to use that for free as long as she wasnt logged on, which was almost never.

1998. There's two things I remember most about my first days connecting via dial up:
1. Napster. Being able to download music!!!!! 2. Porn. Does anyone remember trying to jack off to pictures that loaded line by line?!?

I believe it was around 1992. We had Prodigy. For the younger crowd, Prodigy was a bit like AOL before AOL dominated the internet. Me and a friend thought we were talking with other young teens (female). In hindsight, they were probably other guys.

On our old TV that had a knob you turned my brother and I would turn it really slow and it would lock the signal in and we had sound too! It was just a little bit snowy but we could watch it. It was called "On TV". We'd wedge a piece of paper in the knob there and it worked like a charm. I remember seeing this porn and one of the pick up lines the guy said was , "why don't we go back to my place, I have the whole Pink Floyd collection on reel to reel".

for like 12 months, maybe in like 2005 or something, we had this illegal TV box where we got like every American channel even porn ones, and I think PPV too, they would scramble it every few months but you just had to go on this forum for the illegal box and download a code onto a usb and stick it into the cable box and it would work again, but one day the forum was never updated with the new code and we had to go back to legal cable, it was awesome while it lasted though

That's an excellent story. When I was in college during the 80's (the entire 80's) whenever we had a roommate who was an engineer, they would brake into the apartment building's cable box and turn everyone's cable on so we wouldn't be detected, then slap a new lock on the box. It usually worked for 6-8 months. This doesn't work in single family homes where my Marxist friend broke into the box and had HBO on when he answered the door for the cable guy.

For some reason at our cabin we have free basic cable. It was turned off 3 years ago and they never asked for the box or anything. I'm just enjoying it while it lasts.

In the UK they apparently have TV license inspectors who try to catch you with a TV hooked up to watch broadcasts (even over the air) if you haven't paid this license fee. Seems simpler just to fund public television with regular taxes.

Yep, tv licence - 150 quid a year for normal terrestrial channels
On top of that I pay 65 quid a month for full sky satellite coverage with every channel and on demand included Except sport package - that cost 20 quid extra and I dont watch much sport

For people who haven't paid it, do the inspectors have the legal authority to demand to come in to check? Or is it just that they keep hassling you to let them in?

I don't even understand why anyone pays for TV service anymore. Y'all do know the internet exists right? That's a subscription to literally everything for free

Oh! Assante was talking about internet access, when he asked "In what year did you first hook up on the internet". I'm glad I didn't reveal too much here.

1996 was the first time on WWW with Netscape. You had to adjust the TCP/IP settings yourself. I was on BBS type of board before that. Where I lived all drug information like high times was banned so all of a sudden I had access to hundreds of drug usenet newsgroups. Rec Drugs was awesome, it the first time I saw all the acid myths shredded. Real correct information about drugs, before that all I had access to to was the library and it was almost all anti drug propaganda.
I remember the first chick I met online, back then internet dating was considered weird and desperate and everyone was like you are going to meet a serial killer.
I remember the first online drug sales community I was in, you snail mailed payment to a PO box. This was before everywhere had medpot and sales were mostly weed. Everyone was super paranoid about cops. I knew it was the future long before silk road.
I don't remember the first movie I downloaded, though I still have tunes from Kazaa and Limewire. Back then most new internet users came from free university accounts so every September for a few years there was a huge influx of newbies doing shit like typing in all caps.

It was 94/95 probably. Back when internet was by the minute like when you had to get minutes for your cell phones.
I remember getting those AOL and Prodigy discs that would give you 50 free hours. Sometimes they would come in the mail and I would ask everyone if I could have theirs.
Back then AOL chat rooms were the big thing to socialize and get free porn sent to you. Then you would put it on a "floppy disc" or hide it in a folder deep in the puter somewhere. I remember when Pam Andersons nudes came out and everyone was trading discs of her nudes.

First home family PC was roughly 1999, internet sometime thereafter (just shitty dial-up, though).
I remember my buddy having AOL internet in 1997-1998, though.

When did your digital journey begin?
I still have my old C64, not sure about the data casette thingy, and the "micro computer, user manual". I spent an age inputting a seemingly endless list of DATA, poke this, next that, twice, cos I fucked up the first time. Result, a ball travelled vertically from bottom left to top right. Gave up any idea of programming after that! Didn't get on the net with that.

Lol. I'm using a Gateway2000 (P5-90) as a 'pedestal' for the sliding shelf I broke off of my computer desk when I fell on it. I think that was the first comp (second hand) that I used to get on the intertwebs with "aol dialup" around 03-04.
Line by line porn. lol. I prefer memory (human) and imagination (fantasy) for that.

I would have used teletext first if anyone else remembers that. The late 90's at an internet exhibition was the first time I used the internet. In the year ~2000 my parents bought an internet box for the TV. Technology seems to have a very short shelf life, every few years something new comes out, after the TV box we jumped to PC with dialup, then broadband, then wifi, now Gb is the new thing, direct cable to brain next, after that we're in the matrix bending spoons

My uncle set my parents up with two Packard Bells in the 90s. The first ran DOS and there were a few rad games on it like Commander Keen and Space Invaders, as well as several other older arcade games. The second initially had Win95 but when we upgraded to Win98 we also got a fancy 56k modem. That was late '98 or early '99. Ol' Netscape.
