I had a DOS machine up til like 93. Had a shitload of kids games for it like treasure mountain and treasure cove and the kings quest series. It was a blast

That's an excellent story. When I was in college during the 80's (the entire 80's) whenever we had a roommate who was an engineer, they would brake into the apartment building's cable box and turn everyone's cable on so we wouldn't be detected, then slap a new lock on the box. It usually worked for 6-8 months. This doesn't work in single family homes where my Marxist friend broke into the box and had HBO on when he answered the door for the cable guy.

For some reason at our cabin we have free basic cable. It was turned off 3 years ago and they never asked for the box or anything. I'm just enjoying it while it lasts.

In the UK they apparently have TV license inspectors who try to catch you with a TV hooked up to watch broadcasts (even over the air) if you haven't paid this license fee. Seems simpler just to fund public television with regular taxes.

Yep, tv licence - 150 quid a year for normal terrestrial channels
On top of that I pay 65 quid a month for full sky satellite coverage with every channel and on demand included Except sport package - that cost 20 quid extra and I dont watch much sport

For people who haven't paid it, do the inspectors have the legal authority to demand to come in to check? Or is it just that they keep hassling you to let them in?

I don't even understand why anyone pays for TV service anymore. Y'all do know the internet exists right? That's a subscription to literally everything for free

Oh! Assante was talking about internet access, when he asked "In what year did you first hook up on the internet". I'm glad I didn't reveal too much here.

1996 was the first time on WWW with Netscape. You had to adjust the TCP/IP settings yourself. I was on BBS type of board before that. Where I lived all drug information like high times was banned so all of a sudden I had access to hundreds of drug usenet newsgroups. Rec Drugs was awesome, it the first time I saw all the acid myths shredded. Real correct information about drugs, before that all I had access to to was the library and it was almost all anti drug propaganda.
I remember the first chick I met online, back then internet dating was considered weird and desperate and everyone was like you are going to meet a serial killer.
I remember the first online drug sales community I was in, you snail mailed payment to a PO box. This was before everywhere had medpot and sales were mostly weed. Everyone was super paranoid about cops. I knew it was the future long before silk road.
I don't remember the first movie I downloaded, though I still have tunes from Kazaa and Limewire. Back then most new internet users came from free university accounts so every September for a few years there was a huge influx of newbies doing shit like typing in all caps.

It was 94/95 probably. Back when internet was by the minute like when you had to get minutes for your cell phones.
I remember getting those AOL and Prodigy discs that would give you 50 free hours. Sometimes they would come in the mail and I would ask everyone if I could have theirs.
Back then AOL chat rooms were the big thing to socialize and get free porn sent to you. Then you would put it on a "floppy disc" or hide it in a folder deep in the puter somewhere. I remember when Pam Andersons nudes came out and everyone was trading discs of her nudes.

First home family PC was roughly 1999, internet sometime thereafter (just shitty dial-up, though).
I remember my buddy having AOL internet in 1997-1998, though.

When did your digital journey begin?
I still have my old C64, not sure about the data casette thingy, and the "micro computer, user manual". I spent an age inputting a seemingly endless list of DATA, poke this, next that, twice, cos I fucked up the first time. Result, a ball travelled vertically from bottom left to top right. Gave up any idea of programming after that! Didn't get on the net with that.

Lol. I'm using a Gateway2000 (P5-90) as a 'pedestal' for the sliding shelf I broke off of my computer desk when I fell on it. I think that was the first comp (second hand) that I used to get on the intertwebs with "aol dialup" around 03-04.
Line by line porn. lol. I prefer memory (human) and imagination (fantasy) for that.
