Advice needed. Sterile grain no pressure cooker.

Hey guys I am new to growing mushrooms and I typically buy sterilized grain bags. I don’t know if I want to buy a pressure cooker just yet because I probably wouldn’t use it for anything else so just looking for some tips on making it without one for now. As far as sterilizing grains in a pot goes... Do you soak the grains overnight first? then place them in a jar in the pot? (raised so it doesn’t burn of course) Do you put it on high or low heat and for how long? Any other tips and suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

The general practice is soak, boil, drain, and sterilize. A regular pot probably won't work and you'd have to increase the steam time. Then you'd wanna make sure you don't throw off your moisture content or burn the grains

Get a sterilizer or keep paying someone else to prep your grain.

Yeah man you cant sterilize grain with and pressure cooker of some very expensive sterilizing equipment. Do the math is it worth it to keep buy pre sterilized?

You can use a pressure cooker to sterilize grain, BRF cakes, agar, Liquid Cultures, "lab" equipment and you can use it to pasteurize substrate
PCs are probably the single most useful investment you can make as a cultivator since they are the ultimate weapon against contams. In the long run it will save you money because you get charged a premium for buying pre-sterilized anything

The crux of this hobby is sterile substrate to expand spores or agar into. The only reliable way to do this is by pressure cooking grains/flour etc. I've worked in a lab with an autoclave and they autoclave everything that requires sterility. It's the only way. Would steaming work? Perhaps, I've seen some threads talking about it but it would be far less reliable than 90 minutes at pressure/temp in a pressure cooker (plus pre soaking for 12 hours and boiling). Otherwise you're really gambling with the outcome of the grow, possibly wasting weeks on contaminated spawn. If you are at all thinking about doing anything in this hobby you need a pressure cooker (perhaps need is a strong word but yes, i'll say need)
Also do make sure you pre-soak. It germinates endospores and things that otherwise would survive the pressure cooking. When I was first experimenting with making grain spawn I skipped the long soaks, I soaked for perhaps 2 hours until hydration, boiled and then pressure cooked them (90 min after temp/pressure was achieved so perhaps 110-120 min total) and these jars got contaminated within a week. The thing that prevented this was soaking the grains. I went from all the jars contaminating to 2 out of 30 jars contaminating, a rate that is perfectly acceptable.

Thanks for the tip! I’m just going to buy a pressure cooker to make things easier on myself and cheaper in the long run.

I dont "pre-soak". I used to. I dont notice a difference between grain that was soaked and grain that was just boiled.

No pre soak here either. And there’s evidence that soaking doesn’t do anything. I low simmer for 44 minutes, and then drain/dry. After sterilizing, my moisture ends up just right with no burst grains.
But, pressure cooker is needed. Plain and simple. If not, stick with buying bags, as you really are just wasting your time.

Any grain i might be using just gets boiled til hydrated. Only thing that changes with the type of grain is the duration of the boil.

Definitely worth buying a pc.
I always soaked wbs overnight up until a few months ago. Since then I’ve been doing no prep with great results. So much easier just adding seeds and water to each jar.
