I won't watch it. Some people are saying it is celebrating pedophilia, some say its highlighting modern pageants young girls dance in, to show how its inappropriate. If it is attempting to highlight how its inappropriate they don't need to broadcast footage of little girls in risque outfits, to show how wrong it is.

Bad move on Netflix IMO.

Has anyone actually watched it? JW?

I don't believe in the sexualization of young girls. The second I sprouted tits I was being harassed by fully grown men who were my father's age. I was 13. It's rampant and it goes on with or without cancel culture. I don't know what this movie is about, but it seems like it should be netflix that should be coming under fire for the way they promoted it.

Has anyone actually watched it or is everyone just jumping into the meme machine and letting all original thought and opinion go out the window, again. Genuinely curious as I've not watched it either - but I'm getting the impression that no one here has either.

"Wubby's" video  was made so that pedophiles could watch little girls shake their asses. "Wubby" and all of "Wubby's" followers are pedophiles.

Consensus seems to be like everyone here has suddenly become a bible thumper in their attitude toward this film. It doesn't seem like anyone has seen it because if they did they likely wouldn't be saying such things.

Like I mentioned the film won quite a few awards in France and the woman who made it conducted 18 months of research for the film to show the problems it tries to portray. The entire cast received a full explanation of everything that was to take place and why.

Those who criticize this film for being pedophilia don't know a thing about it.

I haven’t seen it so I cannot form an opinion - or say anything about it one way or the other.
But I do know - There’s always something worse out there *cough porn * and other crappy or disgusting films*.

To cleanse the Mind’s palate I offer this film below,
It is a (wholesome: Rated PG) tragic romcom drama depicting the life of various shroomery graems & smileys - enjoy!

alright. So I feel icky after watching most of this and agree that the film is exploitative of young children - but I don't necessarily agree that the film's message is glorifying pedophilia, as someone who was apart of the dance world it seems to me, like more a statement on the oversexualization of children, and that it's sort of supposed to gross you out. Whether is actually accomplished that in any significant why, obviously, I can't speak on. Watching those scenes of 11 year olds feels disgusting and exploitative to me, and maybe the director intended that. Doesn't make it okay, or a good thing, but I fail to see how this is necessarily glorification.

But dance competitions can be this bad in general, as well, as someone who has taken part in them around that age - which is why I could see why the director is like 'oh no it's against the sexualization of children' - particularly with the sexualization of girls that age. It's a sign of a larger issue.

It's also exploiting the children who are acting in those roles, and I don't condone that - but it's honestly not THAT far off from certain dance competitions involving children now. I get why people feel uncomfortable watching it, and why there's backlash.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/327324990_Sexualization_of_Prepubescent_Girls_in_Dance_Competition_Innocent_Fun_or_%27Sexploitation%27

Take a looksie. The dance world can be absolutely fucked, and little girls are sexualized like this constantly - though Cuties seems to push it to a whole new level of grotesque and I get why people are uncomfortable. Let's not even get started on the child beauty pageants.

I don't think you can be mad at this movie, and simultaneously okay with those things, and be considered logically consistent.

THEYRE SPREADING THEIR LIPS ON FUCKIN SCREEN!  It’s not even close to an inappropriate dance moms routine. From what I saw in both videos.  I don’t think I could ever be convinced this is appropriate; regardless of what kind of “social commentary” you can invent for it

If that was your daughter in one of those routines, would your or would you not see how sick it is?

Missed that section. And no, I wouldn't. I don't think I said anything that condoned it. In fact I said literally, I don't condone it.

I'm just trying to have an actual discussion about it and some of the things that have affected me personally, as someone who's been a young girl, who has dealt with oversexualization - both in general, and as a dancer. But clearly there's no room for a larger discussion here, especially if you're GONNA GET ALL CAPS LOCKY on me.

That’s the point. It’s to shock people into taking notice. Everyone wants to write it off as porn, well look around. This is literally everywhere. Girls are being told that this is what it is to grow up and mature, and they are prone to imitation.

Is it hard to watch, yes. But watch you must to comprehend. It’s like how starship troopers mocks the audience with how over the top it is and calls attention to societal problems.

At least the children that Trump creeped on were teenagers :elmo::mad2:.

I would say we've already normalized sexualization of young pre-pubescent children in some circles, and Cuties takes it to a new grotesque extreme, personally. I don't think it's okay, I don't know that taking it off netflix will do much more than soothe our triggered feels, rather than accomplish something actionable that helps children. But who knows.

The overly emotional selective outrage is tiresome, at best, as well. Especially because the only decent thing that can come of this movie is a stark conversation about ugly aspects of our society(and..probably French society too.) I do feel for the girls in the film though, and the idea that a grown adult was coercing them to twerk for the camera skeeves me out regardless of whether it was for 'high art' or not, it makes absolutely no difference. Whole movie seems to me to be something like this :

We sexualized 11 year olds to show that society sexualizing 11 year olds is gross and wrong.

I don't know that the movie shouldn't be taken off netflix. But I don't think it's attempting to normalize or glorify, I do think it's trying to do the opposite. I do not agree that it's right, or okay, or that it's 'worth it' for art, or anything. I just would like to actually have some discussion of it.

Especially since so many of the people here are so outspoken about cancel culture.

I don't really understand why the sudden outcry because of this movie. As many here attest to; this has been going on since time immemorial.

I understand what it is to be suddenly sicked by the realisation of the extent of it however. When I did my first 'Great American Road Trip' I stopped in a diner in a tiny town in NC. Picked up the local newspaper type thing and it had pictures of all of the beauty pageant kids in it. Right down to 'Prettiest Baby', and going up in years/categories to about 17.

The moment when I saw the sexualisation of the girls in that my stomach knotted. The American tradition of that, and Cheerleaders and such, is probably why 1/4 females have been sexually assaulted in this country by the time they're 18.

It's a problem. I don't suppose there's an awful lot of good shouting about it and arguing with ones peers about it is going to do though. Much like all the crimes that go on in this world, it just is, and getting angry isn't going to do shit but ruin your day.

It will only destroy what you are not.

I'm not watching the movie but I have heard a rundown of the plot. Its about a girl who is stuck between traditional Muslim society where her father is bringing a second wife from Senegal and secular French society which rewards women for being whores and it shows how that whore culture trickles down to young girls and leads them to being whores.

the film maker's point was to show that young girls shouldnt be whores and people shouldn't be ok with how young girls are acting.

there is an argument to be made that it was not nessesary to depict 11 year old girls dancing like that to get the point across and the young actresses may have been exploited. but the film maker will tell you it was meant to make you uncomfortable.

regardless of the tactics I agree with the message, we shouldn't celebrate women for being whores in our culture and we should especially protect young girls from that kind of culture.

I have a young cousin who is definitely going down that road of becoming promiscuous and sexualized and its super lame. she dresses super skimpy and she says her friends all want to date an older man who will buy them things and stuff. and she drinks and vapes parties with guys. i hadn't seen her for years then i saw her this year and she's swollowed this view of what women are and what life is hook, line and sinker.

Look at the WAP dance ffs. thats the kind of influence young girls have. the message is super relevant. I think people are freaking out because this is the first time they have had to confront that fact but if you get your head out of the sand its happening everywhere.

Would I have chosen to use child actors dancing sexually if I had made the movie? no, but I agree with the message and think its relevant and that we need to face the fact that this is happening on a wide scale in real time, in the real world and not get mad when a movie makes us confront that.

I dont think its good for child actors to be doing that but if this surprises and disgusts you then you need to start directing your outrage at the culture this film depicts.

I never quite understood the point of child beauty pageants, they always sort of creeped me out in some unspoken way.

Even with adults it just feels sad too look at women like that, as objects instead of people.
