Brought in a stray yesterday...
    #26938416 - 09/16/20 07:29 AM (6 days, 5 hours ago)

We began to see a stray dog hanging around our house Sunday and at first we just ignored it. There were no signs of aggression, but this dog was still an unknown.

Monday morning rolled in and she was stilling hanging around so I suggested they take some food and water out. Of course she was skidish and took off running. This did not stop us from feeding Jacks.

Tues came and the only difference was we upped the food to lunch meat and wet dog food. Well... last night my wife and the neighbor kids helped with getting Jack's into our backyard and to my surprise, she happily went.

We all hung out in the back yard petting and playing with her. Sweet sweet dog.

Now the fun part. My wife posted a pic of the dog on a few sites and we will try and get her scanned for a chip this weekend. If everything checks out we might make plans to keep her. Thing is, we have another dog. She too is a sweet sweet dog, mini schnauzer. I have no idea how this will work.

If we did have to choose, our mini schnauzer will stay and jacks will have to go... The right way, but we would at least like to try and keep her, if she doesn't belong to anyone.

She is a much older dog, 4-5 years old and is a german shepherd mix. So... Any suggestions on introducing a new older dog into a household with another female dog, 2 years old, would be greatly appreciated.

I can post pics later too.

I’d cautiously begin introducing Jacks to your dog. Preferably outside to start with so your dog doesn't become defensive of the home if that's in her nature and you can see how they interact in a neutral setting. you can gradually work your way into the house so she can smell that's where your dog lives and become accustomed to that fact. Just keep a close eye on how they both react. and immediately remove them from one another if trouble starts.

The fact that they’re both females would probably work to your advantage. Less likely for aggression to be an issue. Ideally you'd want them to either be indifferent or happy with each others presence. either way take things slow and make sure that there's no fear or hostility displayed by either dog. Sometimes there will be initially but it should work out eventually if its not too bad.

another thing to take into consideration is food. It might not be the best idea to feed them together until you can gauge how they react when food is part of the equation. Especially when together, you might find that one dog will become aggressive towards the other while eating. Hopefully that isn't the case.

All the best with the new doggo!  :dog:

They show a bit of passive aggression, but they appear to be getting used to eachother. This weekend I'll try feeding both of them at the same time while near eachother.

I'd be worried more about the new dog punking out your old dog or worse.

Glad to hear that they're getting accustomed to one another.
:highfive1:

As for the feeding, I'd initially keep some distance between the food bowls. So that they're not standing right next to each other while eating. Be sure to keep a watchful eye so that when one dog finishes they don't attempt to go for the other bowl and ultimately start a conflict. Maybe even take the one to finish first inside so they don't get a chance to do so.
If all goes well you could move the bowls closer next time until they're able to eat side by side without any issue.

Post some pics too if you can...
