Can coco coir be suplemented with nutrients?
    #26938329 - 09/16/20 02:41 AM (3 years, 4 months ago)

I was wondering, if coco coir does not contain any nutrients, can it be supplemented with micronutrients (ie plant food).

Thanks in advance

For what purpose. The mush have all the nutrients that is required in your nutrient substrate. The coir is used for water retention cuz the nutrient substrate sucks at holding water. So there's no benefit to adding micronutrients to the coir, except to possibly screw up the ph and promote contamination.

The spawn is the nutrients. You wont use up all the nutrition that the grain contains anyway. Too much nutrition causes stunted growth and mutants.
Mushrooms don't use plant food.

there was talk years ago that I saw about supplements....

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/20389354/fpart/1/vc/1

I haven't tried it yet though a few people on that thread chimed in fairly recently saying that they saw results from it.

...also eons ago people swore that coffee sped colonization and increased flushes

personally - I am kind of skeptical and I think the general consensus is both of these techniques just add to risk of contamination + add undo complexity. I tend not to dismiss it entirely until I try it myself though.

Curious to know your opinion about this, Bod.
