Slow Colonization of Monotub Substrate
    #26926602 - 09/09/20 03:45 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guys, I hope everyone is doing fine!
So I'm nearing the end of my journey of my first attempt at growing GT and I hit a slow down of my bulk substrate colonization.

I checked it first at 8 days with no FAE and I had some patches of mycelium on the top of the substrate but, after checking again at 14 days I had very little additional growth, so I decided to GE by cracking the lid open and letting some more air in and have some more growth at day 19. My question is if that's considered slow or is everything OK? Also should I close the lid for a few more days or should I leaving open?

Why it be red? It’s hard to see what’s up.

19 days is pretty slow for normal spawn ratios. Did you have this tub totally sealed the first 14 days?

Shrooms take longer to grow on mars. Fact.

How thick is your sub? If too dry could slow things down.  Need pictures from earth not mars.

Sorry!I'll take a normal picture, I just didn't want to shine a light inside so I used a red light to look inside.

Fuck dude I have 10 tubs running with lights on 24/7 with minimal side pinning and good fruit bodies. Don't worry about light

19 days is pretty slow. I spawned at a ratio of 1 part spawn to 5 parts substrate and they took 14 days to fully colonize. I mean fully. They looked well colonized by day 10. This was at 80F with some Gas exchange and normal lightbulbs.

I heard mars is pretty dry:/

Honestly though I'm not really sure what to say here.  Just give it another week or two and check for contams.  If it's near other tubs I'd move it.  Also what's the temperature?  If I remember correctly colder temperatures slows colonization, but you don't want to go over 75-80 degrees.  Check behind me on that.

Good luck man.

I heard that some nooks and crannys of the red light district can be quite dry as well.

If youre growing in a red light district you should find a place thats more moist. Fungus tends to thrive in the moist areas.

The temperature is about 75°f in the house all the time and there are water droplets on the top of the substrate.

The link is to a picture of the tub not on Mars.

Just FYI cubes like light at all stages of growth. It may not help during colonization, though I feel like it does, but it definitely doesn’t hurt.

The only reason I had it in the dark was because I read light could trigger premature pining. I also had very little GE air exchange by cracking the lid a touch. It's my first grow so I'm still try to learn as much as possible.

Also the reason I had no FAE is because I also read that having a high Co2 level helps colonization.

Just think of it as trying to recreate what they’d experience in nature.

Sunlight half the time and plenty of air.

So you would recommend having the FAE holes open during colonization period?

put duct tape over the holes and remove when colonized.  The imperfect lid will provide GE.

It depends on your style and home conditions. Plenty of people go straight to fruiting at spawn. Side by sides apparently show fruits faster with fruiting at spawn. I use shoe boxes, which get plenty of air with the lid unlatched and a fan in the room their whole life. You just want to make sure you don’t have too much air during colonization. You don’t want it to dry out, find the balance.

People used to think cubes needed high co2 and darkness during colonization because some species of mushrooms do and I guess they just figured all fungi liked the same thing but slowly the Shroomery has collectively found the way.
