Shelf life of dormant agar plates
    #26937298 - 09/15/20 02:59 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

My method of storage is in a fridge with fully colonized dishes with their own individual sandwich bag inside a insolated lunch box to avoid temp swings when fridge is opened I think oldest plate mabey 4-5 months no condensation or pooling water in the plates are they still safe for transfers

look up slants if your goal is long turn storage of cultures. Its the best and longest lasting method for storing.

I understand slants for for long term storage but I wanted to know if the ones I got are still usable

I’ve stored plates in the fridge for well over six months with way less control than what you’ve described and it’s always worked well for me.  I think the longest I’ve had one in the fridge was 8 months, and it worked great when I knocked up grain with it.

You can always just take it out and put a wedge on a fresh plate make sure its still clean and viable should be fine though.

I had a similar situation lately. Two types Pan Cyan Multispore on two plates. In the fridge since about 16 months. Plenty condensation, pools of water, mycelium looked f§$"d on both of them.

Took them out a week ago and made transfers to new plates.

One of them grows nicely so far. The other one was dead.
But I do not yet know if the one still alive will still fruit. But on the agar it looks normal.

I would take them out, let them get used to the temperature. Ideally you will already see that they start to grow again. Transfer to new plates.

I think if you have cubes or stone producers you should be fine. They seem to be able to withstand rough handling. Pans mycelium seems more fragile.

But I'm not a TC, so my experience is limited.

I’ve stored plates in the fridge for two years, and they wouldn’t grow after I tried to transfer from them, even though the mycelium was still white.

You need to take the plates out and make a transfer to a new plate once or twice a year to keep the culture fresh.
