Jar price increase?
    #26937032 - 09/15/20 01:08 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Bod says in Bods easy AF getting started TEK that a dozen 1/2 pint jars are between $10-12. I can't find any cases for under $25. The post is from the beginning of 2018; have the prices gone up that much in 2 1/2 years, or is it just because it's canning season?

Pandemic....lots of people took up canning as hobby/precaution I guess. Canning supplies including pressure canners and jars are in a shortage. I've heard rumors that All American Canners is backordered over 20,000 units...and jars are sold out off the shelves every where. I've seen cases of quart jars going for $45 online. $25 doesn't actually sound all that bad give the situation.

Both.  Prices here have gone up 50% recently.  However, I live in a place where canning season is a BIG deal and never saw these prices before.  May reflect a top-tier price increase due to overall demand and supply line issues.  Either way: god damn...  Going to buy out a local small store today that has a few rogue cases of quarts left for 18 bucks.  If they're still there,  that is...
Edit: my answer is annoyingly redundant to above but had to chime in...

I guess I'll just have to use plastic TEK until either prices drop or I can find a deal. I've got more important stuff to buy at the moment, like Agar TEK supplies.

Yeah availability is the real issue around here compared to price gouging,  but plenty of both.  Ziploc (not the off brand if you want the lids to work for more than one run...) containers are cheap AF and I've been running all sizes for months fast and hard with zero problems.  I like that you can run them unmodified without buying another lid too.  The flare shape doesn't allow quite as many in the PC but hell... if you're running half pints who cares?  Might grab a few more PP5 qts today too now that I think about it...  They have been on sale lately.

Jars are still just under $12 depending on size at Walmart. Online sources seem outrageous, and this is due to both shipping cost built in, and high demand. It's currently canning season. I had a discussion with a brick and motor vendor. Their home garden and hydroponic stuff is all back ordered, and mostly in stock put of country. Their has been a massive uptick in home gardening (legal food wise) since people are staying at home and have time for this, as well as new people jumping into gardening for fear of inturupted or contaminated food sources. (Their sales have been up 300% above average since spring).

Going into canning season, everyone is looking for jars; so they are selling put fast. Outside of gardening, more people are getting into canning and preservation of food... As well as it seems like a lot of people got into "home distilling" as well as their seemed to be a flood of mycologist.

Just watch local stores, I scored 4 packs of widemouth lids and 2 twelve packs of widemouth quart jars for $35 at a local store.

I had looked into a few local stores and they were out. Some hardware stores that were still decently priced. Maybe I'll get ahold of them and see if they can order me some. Walmart was almost as expensive as online.

didn't really notice until all the sudden none of the places in my city carry wide moth quarts. @#$%!! guess I'm going to have to get deeply price gouged online if I want them now :frown:

maybe it's time to switch over to bags.

I've gotten lucky over the last week or so and was able to piece together a little stash from family members and FB marketplace. Only got one 1/2 pint wide mouth, so BRF isn't in the cards for now. Was planning on WBS anyways.

I'm hoping that all the last minute, panicky folks that have never cooked anything  besides water, who snatched that shit up on reflex or because of a blog, realise they dont actually want to can food anymore, and all that stuff is taking up too much space, there's going to be cheap PCs and jars all over the place.

It doesnt take long for people to get bored.

I hope.

That's true, I didn't think about that. Like the tulip mania thing, an asset bubble

It's possible that there could be a flood of cheap supplies coming in the future. That'd be nice, I wouldn't mind getting a second PC

I was able to grab a PC a few days ago, looks like Presto had some stock and a few retailers were able to ship them. Didn't last too long though, all were gone when I refreshed the page.

I ended up buying a super small PC because I didn't do enough research. It'll have to do for now. I think I'll be able to get two Quarts of WBS at a time. Hoping a towel on the bottom will be enough, cuz there ain't no room for more than that.

:prayer:

Same thing here. And the prices online are ridiculous.

What are some decent alternatives to 1qt glass jars for spawning to bulk? I'm really glad I picked up a 12 pack when I did, because man they're just impossible to find now. I'm about to drive 20 miles for what says "limited stock" on the Target website. Don't have high hopes, but wish me luck

You could always start with bags. Bags are awesome for bulk because you can fit a lot of spawn in each one and they aren't as clunky as jars, but they are definitely less noob-friendly than jars. I've also seen some people use cylindrical tupperware type things that are similar in size to jars, but I'm not sure what exactly they are or where you find them
