I've got everything. Now what?
    #26935220 - 09/14/20 01:27 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hello fellow mycologists,

I'll try to be as short as possible and less boring. This will be my 1st grow and I really don't want to mess up. I have no experience but an iron will to do it and do it right. It's crazy the amount of information about the right way so for me it was very easy to get confused and this is why I am here, to seek the right guidance. I've attached a picture with what I managed to collect to this moment but for some reason still feel insecure on what to do next. For this project I choose LC syringe spores from Golden Teacher. Here's the list of my customised starter lab kit:

1 Heat pad
2 SAB + 2 dif size boxes
3 BRF
4 Coco bricks
5 Rye
6 Gypsum
7 Two liter of mushroom casing pasteurised
8 Perlite
9 Permatex
10 Microfilter bag with injection port
11 Parafilm
12 Petri dishes 60 x 15 mm
13 Septa grey Butyl 20 mm
14 Agar Agar normal and colourful
15 Pressure cooker Tefal secure 5 neo  6 L
16 Different type of jars since we don't find easy mason jars in EU
17 Microfilter box 2 litre + few small boxes.
18 Erlenmeyer 250 ml
19 Hook for handling hot jars
20 Lighter

+ Alcohol 70%, gloves, mask, sterile scalpel, hygro-thermo meter.

P.S: I don't want my first grow to be brf cakes. I bought brf to test in the near future.

P.S 1: I am not sure how to use items 7, 10 and 17.

I am very aware of the cautions I'll have to take for a sterile environment but I lack of knowledge on which path to go from this moment. TIA

Hey fellow Dutchman here,

Het is een behoorlijk werkje als je alles zelf moet uitzoeken (ik kan t weten). Als je praktische hulp of tips wil kan ik je helpen. Ga je een bulk grow doen of cakes?

Are you sure that the jars/erlenmeyer flask can fit in the PC without being partially under water? If they are under water two things can happen:
1. They can shatter because of the difference in temperature.
2. The bottom part which is under water will only go as high as 100 C and will not sterilize properly leading to contams.

Good eye sir,
The Erlenmeyer does not fit so probably i'll have to figure it out what else to use and with the jars, I have different ones. Probably the little ones will fit since they are only 12 cm (4.7') long. How much water should I put in the pc if I have to sterilize for 90 min?  For an idea, the tray that fits at the bottom of the pc has only 2-3 mm space from the bottom ( I marked them in the pic). Ofc there is an option to flip the tray and pray otherwise I'm sure I can find another "fittable" tray. I know I don't have the perfect PC but this was the best I could find on the market under 100 euros.

Zeker Dutchie. I don't even know what to ask since I still discover on what to do next. I have mixed feelings and a bucket full of information.

The heat pad is unneccesary.
You are definately going to want a bigger pc.

The perlite is also unneccesary.

What material is 17 made of?

The darker links pictured here are the ones i use most.

I haven’t had a problem sterilizing jars where the bottom 1-2 inches was submerged.

Check out one of the shoebox teks, imo they’re by far the best place to start. As long as you follow directions they’re very hard to screw up and yield a lot.

Do you have an lc syringe or a spore syringe?? Lc is liquid culture which is living mycelium and will look like a white blob. Spore syringes are way more common.

I'll do my homework and have a look on shoebox tek. I only know that I don't want brf cakes for now and my bad, I got confused. I have the common spore syringe.

I have the same pains with my small PC thats why i created this poll and made some calculations in this thread so that I understand the underlying physics completely.
Basically you need atleast 1-1.5 litres of water if you manage to set the rocker barely jumping. The greatest danger for a PC is if it runs dry, the bottom will overheat damaging both your PC (bulging) and your stovetop (cracking if it is glass).

If the heat pad is for cooking, it is required to keep the glass-ceramic from staining. I use something like a "heat diffuser plate". If the heat pad is to keep agar hot, meh you can achieve the same i with a bath, but there is no need for that.
The size of the PC is small, but dont worry you can manage! Use 360ml or 370ml jars, they are upto 12cm tall and you can fit 7 of them!

Your jars were not fully sterilized. To sterilize you need to achieve a temperature of about 121C and the bottom 1-2 inches of your jars never reached a temperature above 100C. They were basically boiled. Luckily you didn't have contams that can survive the boil.
Keeping the bottom of the jars submerged is the leading cause of contams in improperly sterilized grain IMHO. It defeats the purpose of PC-ing them.

What AKA said is valid, my info is BS, sorry.

Just to add about running the PC dry, some examples of bulging: here and here and here.

With small PCs we dont have the luxury of adding too much water so please test it out before setting it on a long 90 min cycle.

About the SAB. I just noticed that your cover is black and the sides are with matte finish. You may need to get a more transparent box or create a "window" with plexiglass(or just clear plastic) so you can see through.

As long as more than half the grain is in steam then they are steam sterilized.

A heat mat doesnt get hot enough to cook anything... I'm confused as to what purpose it truly has

I'm confused,

I am certain that a higher pressure increases the boiling point. At 15psi for example, the boiling point of water is ~257°F rather than 212. I thought this is the whole purpose of using a pressure cooker. Am I missing something? You just seem so sure in your answer that its making me question myself.

You are absolutely right! It does raise the boiling temperature I just looked at the phase diagram of water and you are right. Somehow I got the idea that the diagram looks a bit different and that the temperature of liquid water stays more or leas the same with the slightly increased pressure. Thanks for correcting this misinformation!

Will strikeout my BS information on previous post.

Wow this opens a whole new realm for mini PCs, this means I can put a lot more water in my PC! Is there an upper limit how much water can be placed? Could it be like 50% of PC height?
