How do these look?
    #26934172 - 09/13/20 08:50 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

This is my first grow and I wanted to get some opinions/advice on how it looks and what I should and should not be doing. I inoculated 6 BRF Cakes and 2 Multi Grain Spawn Bags about 6 1/2 weeks ago with B+ Cubensis from a multi spore syringe. I used a TIT set at 78° during the colonization and consolidation process (I know most people hate tub in tubs) , it was the only option I had. The jars took 4 1/2 weeks to colonize (1 cake and neither of the spawn bags colonized) and were left to sit for another week to consolidate. I birthed the cakes 8 days ago, dunked for 20 hours and then rolled in Verm.

Here’s the cakes a few days before full colonization:

I ended up sticking the cakes in 2L’s because there were only 5 left and I set them in my closet with a 6500K light on 12/12:

It took 3 days but I finally saw my first pin:

More pins began to pop up but they were growing super slow so I decided to put them into my SGFC that I originally made to hold 6 cakes and 2 big spawn bags:

The SGFC is 105qt (I know that’s absurd for 5 cakes) but I figured it would be better since it will receive FAE and will have twice the humidity. I ended up taping about half the holes on 5 sides of it (not the bottom) to prevent the perlite from drying out too fast and also cut new tin foil/moved them closer together.

The cakes are still growing slowly and have darker colored caps. The temperature stays at 70° and I have been misting/fanning 4-5 times a day. I was (still am) scared that I have either been watering them too much or not giving them enough water. I picked them up to feel them but I forgot what they felt like after dunking! Yesterday I decided to only mist them once, just incase I was drowning them and here’s what they looked like after 20 hours:

The split pics are a before and after (20 hours in between) and you can see that the color of the caps has lightened up and some of the pins started to grow more vertically. I also got fuzzy feetWhat does this mean? Does this mean that I have been overwatering? Is this bad or good? I rolled the cakes completely in vermiculite after dunking but 8 days after birthing seems like a long time for them to still be this size. Should I add a layer of wet vermiculite to the top of each cake? I think I have a good pin set and I’m sure that uses a ton of energy. Please let me know what you think. I have read countless threads trying to figure out what I am doing wrong and I can’t figure it out. I feel like they should be growing much faster than this BUT I’m honestly just happy that they are still alive and growing (very slow).

I just went to fan them while writing this post and now they look like this:

A lot more of them seem to be growing upwards now and more of the pins caps changes color (from dark brown/kinda purplish to lighter brown

Thanks! I’ll try to if they turn out ok. I’m honestly surprised I made it this far. I did everything by the book but have had a ton of setbacks

Thank you! Not sure if you read the post but they basically went from short/fat with dark colored caps to lighter colored caps and growing more vertically over night. The only difference is that I only misted them once yesterday opposed to like 3-4 times. I thought that they were dehydrated but maybe I was wrong. Do you think that I was drowning them and that’s why they changed so drastically all of the sudden?

No that's just what mushrooms do

Pins are generally short, fat, and darker.  They will often grow, literally overnight, into regular looking mature mushrooms, it's not anything you did different.

Thanks for the info Forrester! All of this is brand new to me so every slight change in appearance has thrown me off guard. They have grown a lot since the last picture! I had no idea that a mushrooms appearance could change this drastically in 24 hours! This truly has been a rewarding experience
