Help! Black spots!
    #26929423 - 09/11/20 06:22 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hi all

Have a couple of San Pedro cuttings that seem to have developed these black spots. Is this rot, and should I cut them out?

Have stopped watering these for now (healthy neighbours still getting water though). They are planted in a combo of 40% organic (cactus soil, earthworm castings, coco coir), 60% mineral (perlite, pumice, river sand). Been watering them once every 1-2weeks since planting them 2-3m ago.

Each has grown pups and seemed to be coming along nicely till now. Coincidentally (?) the two slower growers are the ones pictures with spots.

Stop watering them all together and put them in sunlight to dry out the fungal spots. The progression should slow when they root. You can also rub sulfur into the black spots with a tooth brush but it's not necessary.

Blackspot is a miserable disease to fight off but it can be beaten. It comes from heat + humidity.

Thanks! They've gone without water for 2w now. Hopefully they will dry completely soon. These cuttings have rooted for about 1m+ now.. think I may have over watered.

Any reason or need to cut out the fungal spots at all?

The spots will scar over when they dry out. You will likely get black spot every summer if you are in a humid region.

I live in socal and my cuttings don't see water for months. Just the morning dew is enough for their tiny root systems. You want the roots to be scouting around for water while they establish

Second that to the post above, I got a macro x lumberjack and a few other specimens from FL this summer. They were rooted with a lot of black spots, i dont water at all really and all new growth is healthy
