Can you use a pressure cooker to make ethnobotanical tea/infusions?
    #26931956 - 09/12/20 02:47 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

I'm getting back into ethnobotanicals.

Most of them seem best served as a tea. So lot's of boiling.
Many requiring 3-12hours on the stove cooking :rocket:
Surely there's got to be a way of cutting this cooking time down and using less energy?

I was thinking a pressure cooker maybe... Or perhaps a slow-cooker (for the energy bill).
Would a pressure cooker work for making tea/infusions {quickly}?

Thanks for any thoughts.

I use a pressure cooker to do extractions rather than boiling for three times as long, works great.

I guess it depends on the stability in heat of what you're making tea out of. Pressure cooker is a bit hotter under pressure than boiling water, maybe ~20% more at 15psi. Most alkaloids will survive that, but maybe some won't. Depends on the melting point.

You can always research it to see if it's technically feasible before attempting it. There might be some unknown that wrecks it anyway, but it's worth trying imo.

Awesome. Glad to hear, and you cook it on average 3x less for similar extraction levels?
This'll be a major time saver for me.. I can't be faffed to stir a pot for hours on end.

Thanks!!

Yeah, 2-4 times less depending on what I'm cooking. Some things that I used to boil 3 or 4 times I only pressure cook once for the same duration as a boil and the job is done. Other things I do twice for half the time... Just depends.

I guess it depends what you're working with too. A bit of trial and experimentation to find what works with your source materials may be in order. If you write down your results afterwards you can call it science. :awesome:
