No more Uncle Ben's (I know, I know) 1

From the price of UB bags I have bought, I could have gotten a used pressure cooker. Maybe even a cheaper new one.
The first time I bought 6 of the Uncle Ben's brand and within a week they smelled of rot so I threw them out. Then I bought 10 of the Safeway brand because they have less water in them. Same smell. I just let it go hoping I was just being a noob and didn't know what they were supposed to smell like.
Well, I just went to check on them after 2 weeks and got real excited cuz they were hardening, which they say on the UB subreddit is when you should break them up and shake the bags. While doing that I noticed rice spilling out of the micropore covered holes and the smell was STRONG! Then I looked on the shelf and what I thought was spilled rice started squirming. Fucking fungus gnats had somehow gotten through the micropore tape and laid eggs in my bags!
I tossed them all and will be purchasing the proper equipment to do this thing right via the BRF TEK.
So anyways, just another testimonial about why the UB TEK is garbage. Any personal tips for a beginner would be greatly appreciated. I've read through the Getting Started thread.

Luckily I only wasted 3 bags and the material I used was extra anyway. 2 of them toasted pretty quick. One I let it go a month breaking it up eventually it turned into a green white blob of stink. I was very careful about every step. I have seen people say they have done it and it is not impossible but much easier to do jars with better results.

Buy a sleeve or two of Petri dishes, agar, light malt extract, build a SAB, buy some WBS and prep Fooman style, spawn to shoe boxes SFF style, enjoy mushrooms in large quantities.

I've got an SAB already, I'm definitely doing the agar thing from here on out (I've got a feeling my spore syringes are contaminated), and I'm not really sure what WBS is, but I'll look it up. I've got a pile of shoeboxes along with a 55 qt. tub to do a Shotgun chamber. I'll probably try the shoebox tek first, as space is limited.

Wild bird seed. Grain prep isn’t difficult but seems to trip a lot of new growers up for some reason. WBS is simple to prep using Fooman’s method you can search for.
Or go with rye or wheat. BRF cakes are only for people without a PC in my mind. Cakes are a pain and offer a low yield for the work. A qt of Colonized grain to a qt and a half of coir/verm in a shoe box and you just wait for mushrooms basically. But you need that clean grain spawn to start with.
And yeah spore syringes are often dirty which is why agar is the way to go. If you put spore syringes to agar you’ll see a lot of bacteria. Spore prints are the best to work with for agar.
That reply is all over the place but hopefully makes sense

Totally makes sense. Well, as far as my knowledge is concerned. I don't know enough about birdseed to quite get why it would be higher yielding, but I'll definitely be looking into it.
Unfortunately I'm in Cali, so I have to take what I can get when it comes to spores. I'm hoping I can get ahold of something else soon, but from what I'm reading up about agar, you can pretty much eliminate the contam present in what you have after you get it onto the agar, right?

What about premade agar dishes? I will absolutely be getting the supplies to pour my own, but I kind of wanted to get a couple of the premade ones to play around with until I could afford all of the stuff.

Wild bird seed in particular doesn’t give you a higher yield I just meant bulk growing in general gives you a higher yield for the time and effort than BRF cakes.
And yeah once you germinate spores on agar you can transfer clean mycelium to a new plate, even if there’s nasty stuff growing along with it. As long as you can cut a clean piece out.

I messed up a set of 2 Uncle Bens bags but completely my fault (I over inoculated them). I currently am on the end phases of a 4 set (4 different strains) of U.B.T. bags. 2 strains a a bit slower than the other but all is well! No smell! And rock solid mycelium cakes!!

Your uncle Ben’s messed up because it’s generally a shit tier way of getting spawn.

Honestly I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the ease, simplicity, and efficiency of the PF tek. I highly recommend making up a few jars for fun and XP even if you plan on getting a pressure cooker and going with WBS or other bulk method. Cakes shred to be used as spawn just fine if you really want to fruit as a shoebox rather than cakes in a water tub.
