Want to sign up for school or get a certification. What did you go to school for and why?

I have a decent job, but I’m not happy with it in general. I really think I should do something else. My girlfriend is trying to sign up for nursing school but a little unmotivated because we’re not exactly sure how to. Some credits don’t transfer to other schools, etc. Anyone able to give me some pointers on what you need to do in order to sign up? Maby it’s not as difficult as we’re making it out to be.
I definitely need some grants, and probably loans. Just not sure how to go about it. May sound dumb but any pointers would be great.
Also, would some of you mind telling me what you went to school for? Do you likes what you do? I’m getting older (not 30 but close,) and want to be legit...

Bsc in engineering and MA in philosophy
Im in upper management (one of the C-suite) for an innovative med-tech company
I dont hate my job. It allows me lots of freedom (make my own hours) and easily pays the bills. Enough even so my partner doesnt have to work and can be a fulltime mom to our two daughters.
During my second time in University I worked night shifts to pay for it. Therefore never had much students debt and have recently paid off our mortgage
I studied philospohy because of a personal interest but Im pretty sure without my technical education I would still be working some shitty dead-end job. Apart from being a teacher I have never seen a job-ad for a philosopher

i did a 6 month cwb (canadian welding bureau) certification that only cost 3 grand + log book
plus the 500$ gouge weldind exam w/ stress bend on all four positions and its great!
My cwb card is for stick welding on short-circuit carbon steel machines only and it is mostly rated for structural electrode-positive welding.
Edit: i re-read and am guess, only other thing you can do w/ shortcircuit welding is stainless steel so

Many companies higher people with liberal arts degrees for management, as they generally have a more people centric education. Most friends I have who have liberal arts degrees work in some form of middle/upper management.

Maybe it's a tech thing, I work in contract pharma and like 80% of upper management don't know shit about what we do, its all liberal arts degrees and MBAs, granted their smart guys, and overtime can get a good sense of what we do, but when it comes down to brass tacks, they're totally lost.

Check out your local community colleges and trade schools, look up a list of their cerrificate programs. I got a certificate for auto damage appraisal that paid like 50k-70k a year but it wasn't for me, was only a 3-month course though, two nights a week. Also did a one year certificate course in addiction counseling, money isn't great but it was a fun program and there are lots of jobs.
I'm now finishing up my doctorate in one of the medical rehab fields. The pay is good but with loans financially it probably wasn't worth it, recent changes to medicare and health insurance fucked things up a bunch. I love the work though, I've worked too many jobs I've hated so it's nice to actually be doing something fulfilling.
As far as signing up, just request transcripts from any past colleges, then email the director of whatever program you want to apply for. They'll get you a meeting with an admissions advisor to go over all the details. They want your money, so it's usually a pretty easy process.

To be honest one the best jobs I had was when I was sentenced to community service picking up trash with one of those grabbers for a few days

Zero stress and cleaning up my city was actually quite rewarding

well I'll start with saying I don't think you are ever too old for school. But, if you plan on going into debt in order go to school.... I would not do that. But that is just me, it might work out well for some but the thought of being in debt terrifies me.
This is a problem I am going to confront within the next year or so. I am 28. I dropped out of high school, got into a pretty popular and well known university for FREE, through this early college program. And, me being 17 or whatever it was at the time, I thought I knew everything and college was a scam and I'd learn more just smoking weed and living life. I dropped out. Fast forward to 26 working shit jobs and hating life... decided it was time to start doing something. I am now on track to receive my associates in Psych at the end of this semester which is in December. From that point on I am looking at a Bachelors in psych...but the school I would want to go to is somewhere around 30k.
I can't see myself committing to that. And what is worse, even though I love psych and love learning and talking about it, I cannot see myself sitting in a fucking office or any type of formal, professional environment every day working for someone else. So, I've been working on different business ideas in my spare time and I think almost subconsciously I am hoping I get myself involved in a successful business venture before I get my associates and have to decide whether or not to move forward with my bachelors. Ideally I would love to start a successful business and earn an extra 30k and go to get my bachelors between 30-40 than bank the rest of my fucking life on getting a career after I get my bachelors, and then if I do get said career will I even enjoy it?
I mean this is your life man. Your one life. I know I am gonna do whatever the fuck I can in order to be HAPPY. So many people go to work everyday and fucking hate it. and those people went to school and PAID to end up in that situation. What the fuck is worse than that? I'd rather be fucked up on my luck at mcdonalds than in that situation, at least then I have the drive and motivation to find what I wanna do.. The people that hate their jobs that went to college, they aren't miserable enough to find something else, but they aren't happy... they still spend half the day glazed over imagining shoulda coulda wouldas.
But anyways. As far as your situation. You are thinking too much. Go to the school you want to go to, and go to their financial aid office and tell them your situation and express your desire to go to school. They are paid to sit there all day and help people like you. If it is an online school, I am sure they have a number you can call or an email.
If you really want to do it don't let anything stop you. You might feel incompetent right now but when you have it figured out in a month cause you took the steps to do so you won't care about that. Just go do it.

Nurses are probably in high demand right now. Check out Workforce and she might get put on the fast-track for free. I'm hoping they'll pay $5,000 for n HVAC course.

I don't understand the Health-Care concern; I've been to the doctor twice in 40 years, once for a case of worms for which they gave me a horse wormer($2at Tractor Supply) and once for a cracked rib which they didn't do anything for except pills.

ps, why dont chu go work at the place they fill propane bro?
they have the industrial propane place in your town that you can go do those big fills on tall cans great job
you can maybe do some spark watch or something. you could go signaling you can flip cars from the auction
usually all that is fucked on em is a broken ignition(remove bring locksmith) tranny sensor is fucked (drop tranny replac sensor-twoday job) or fucked up brake or brake caliper
if you have leaks other than like a radiator hose. fuck it can stay there
at the auction, you can hit the starter with a hammer when no one is looking or with a rock also works
edit: go work at the library. great way to get high at work. you also get to hang out with all the native and sleeman in town. make sure not to lock up a kid in the computer lab.

ya long as its not an import bmw or something like a rolls royce 78
you should be fine getting it off google fix
ive got two dodge caravans right now in my drive way

I get parts of the red one and put it in the greenie
did the brakes
now gotta put a window and panel in maybe

the only problem with the dodge caravans is that when the key in driver side doorlock turns clockwise after unlocking counterclock wise the door-> sets the alarm on the car and when you try to start it, car will rev up and not start. gotta get key out into the driver side doorlock and turn key counterclockwise to reset the alarm.

I wanna upgrade to a '14 dodge truck with a 100,000 from a '04 with 225,000 for about $6,000. Course it needs some work, I should prolly work out how to get into the auctions like you said. They used to sell some nice tractors dirt cheap in Wisconsin. A man could make a living reselling those down south.

When I left Wisconsin it was so cold the salt wouldn't melt the road ice. The ponds didn't show water until I got to Kentucky and I said I never want to go further north than that. But, Man! they would sell farm equipment at those auctions for a penny a pound, for 10 gang plows or whatever.

for the most part, getting into the auctions would be dirt cheap if you had a little flat bed to tow shit around. you could probably rig a trailer for cars only - but a ton truck, youre need some heavy.
other wise, you can get into the world of hydraulics and tow shit around. you can get a shit boom bed on kijiji for like 1 grand but you gotta re-run all the lines and also youll have to have another boom or a wall jig to lift that to put on the truck. plus youll need to buy a hydraulic pump that'll fit your rig and chassis which is another grand.
On hydraulic pumps thoe, i got chu. You wanna make one off a power steer man, thats what i keep telling people. Hydraulic pumps are the same thing as a power steering units, essentially. you get a power steering pump from the scrap yard for 50$

nursing. i love it
I started back to school right before I turned 28
you can get your license after 4 semesters of school. many programs offer them back to back so that it only takes 15 months
there are some prerequisite courses you need in order to get in though- anatomy and physiology, microbiology, chemistry, nutrition, growth & development... so yeah, if you dont have those you gotta tack on another 2 semesters
it's a great job though

I think radiology would be a good area of expertise. How does that compare? They seem to get paid well and they get to miss out on a lot of the shit most people wouldn't want to do. I think it would be sweet just sitting around curating MRIs and CAT scans all day.

I wouldnt do it. I actually considered it first but my friend is a radiology tech and he reminded me that they have computers now that are capable of doing the job of a radiology tech and with even greater accuracy than a human. it hasn't been widely implemented yet but it probably will be over the next decade or so

U should learn how to weld, work on cars, or do plumbing if you want guaranteed return on your investment. I think degrees are kind of overrated unless you get an expensive engineering/science/math degree etc. not too many people are in it for a bachelors (or higher) in biology/engineering/science n math degrees you have to take calc II etc. and almost all associate degrees only qualify you for menial jobs barely above entry level anyway. Cleaning windows is ok money hard to get the customers but there’s no overhead you can almost start a window cleaning business as a broke college kid.
Nursing is probably the best career to get into for how quickly you can actually work and nurses will always be in demand. Probably a pretty demanding profession that can be draining sometimes tho, I could only imagine

I think everyone should try to work for themselves. Even if you fail. There's so many different ways to sell yourself and your time. It could be a hobby, just some money on the side, or something you're passionate about and want to take further. People waste so much money on random crap they don't need I think it's a blessing to take that and better yourself

I dont know how this goes in the US but here in the Netherlands the window cleaning business is run like some sort of organised crime thing
Certain families controlling neighborhoods and you dont want to start washing on someone else turf
Once a month the "collector" comes by on his scooter, he's the shadiest of all

I'm a cnc machinist in a union. I wouldn't recommend trying for that unless you are getting in the game as a very young man. I am not one of those people who say "its never too late to go to school" I have noticed a very serious problem learning new information the less plastic your brain becomes with age.
