Ok see I didn’t know it was mainly replacing grainspawn I thought it had some special blend of nutrients the myc loved.

Yeah lions mane is so thin until it starts fruiting that I’m not sure what the lc will look like.

If mycelium on a plate colonizes only the surface then why is it that if you add food coloring to the agar mix then as the culture grows the color fades?
My understanding is that whatever is available at the surface is what the mycelium consumes, so where does the color go??
I have a little experiment running that I'm collecting data on to satisfy my curiosities but I figure maybe someone could maybe shed some light on this for me.

I would suspect that the fungus is secreting digestive enzymes that denature/digest the color.  There’s also likely super fine hyphae filaments that are penetrating the media which are too small to see with the naked eye...someone with a scope should check.  That said, here’s a mexicanae plate where the mycelium has completely run through the media.

Lots of great info you guys! I’ll check out the gourmet boards and research more. I’ll be buying some syringes soon to get some going on agar just so I have some clean cultures to work with when I have all my equipment together. I already have a good amount of stuff for it so that’s a plus.

Btw Mycolorado those reishi in your sig are awesome!

Ps: if anyone has some cultures or spores they would want to trade for something I’m open to that. If not I’ll search some good vendors and see what’s around. I should have done this a long time ago!

Yeah, those reishi came out sweet!  You can also order spawn and then throw some grains on agar to keep the cultures. Field and forest has some great stuff at a reasonable price.

Oooo I like the look of their spawn. I don’t have any wood at my disposal but I’m sure I can find some logs somewhere and put them in my backyard. I’ll also be able to make my own spawn to do g2g transfers. Great thing about knowing how to grow actives is I’m sure that these won’t be much harder. I’ll look around for grow tents for cheap too. I’m sure I’ll have all my ducks in a row by the time my spawn is ready.

My lions mane usually looks like that top plate.

Tryp is the lion mane lc have the same myc blobs in it as cube lc? I figured it might not since it’s mostly just super thin hairs til it starts fruiting and forming the snowflake stuff.

Complete disaster.

I ended up in the ER for a bit of an extended stay and with nobody to tend to the 40+ monotubs they all stagnated horribly and the one small fan I had blew the mold from one to another, and another.

Discharged and I came home to tub after tub of white and green, melted mushrooms, the air so thick with mold spore I could barely breathe. The basement walls and beams showing it too. Since the doors weren't being opened no air exchange to the basement had been taking place at all. Coupled with heavy rains that caused the slab to excrete water the RH was insane.

I've purchased a polypropylene suit and hood, an OVP95 respirator, 10 gallons of Concrobium but a mold fogger was not available so I purchased a new backpack sprayer and I'm hoping to hose down the entire thing, tubs, walls, floors, joists all of it before I start moving stuff out of there. Needless to say it's all a complete and total loss and the contamination is incredible. I'm at a loss for words here as it was a struggle before but now I'm unsure if I can remedy this. I've bought a 700 CFM in-line 8" blower and will be plumbing in new duct work to feed a constant supply of dry air from the upper floors in order to combat humidity and decrease stagnation as a dehumidifier will only raise temperatures and won't supply fresh air.

I have my doubts that I'll be able to grow down there again and I'm a bit shook. I expected problems with a RH of 80-85% but this ran wild without even a small bit of air exchange from opening any of the basement doors. I feel like a fucking idiot but I couldn't help being admitted for the ol' ticker.

What a loss man, what a loss. I assume the colonizing spawn bags/jars down there will be as well because the spore load is so high it's coating everything.

just coat the spores on the walls with a thick layer of cube spores, problem solved

sorry buddy that sounds dreadful. but good news, you're out of the ER

Hate to hear that man. I hope and pray you're at least not in the USA if it was an extended ER stay. That just adds to all the other shit you're dealing with now.

Overnight stay for a migraine cost me $18k before insurance

Did something naughty, used sundried manure, non pasteurized.
Otherwise a normal spawnage.

Today I noticed that a small part of the manure had pushed itself up of the sub, and lo and behold: a tiny subcoprophilia (i expect) from the dung popped up.

Just had a quick question about my WBS prep. I'm following Fooman's tek but I'm using plastic lids that I've drilled a hole into and covered with an SFD that has been silicone'd on for GE. I covered them in foil as well.

When I was loading the jars into my PC should I have tightened the lids all the way?

I put them in with the lids a quarter turn loose from all the way tight but now I'm worried having the lids a tiny bit loose will allow contaminants to get in while the jars cool in the PC overnight.

Not a big deal I just wanted to do these for a test run before I have a full batch of clean plates to inoc with but it would be shitty to lose these to a stupid mistake.

Related, has anyone dealt with little weevils in their WBS? Pennington's specifically. Mine's been sitting around for a while before I opened it. Searched and found some older threads about it, I'm not too worried, just gonna be careful with keeping them confined in the bag for now but just wondering if anyone else has dealt with it.

thats an interesting thought. i always just assumed that it was just consuming it right out of there along with everything else. heres a shot of how blue it started at and then how it turned into a purple colour and just eventually takes it all clear. i dont have a pic of the final but all colour and damn near all agar was gone

You don't wanna crank down on the lids. It'll make them a pain to open. I just screw them on till the threads start to catch

My cheap nesco quit on me recently. Definitely still under warranty but I haven’t tried to bring it back or anything. I figure it’s gotta be easy to fix though it’s literally just a fan.

Super annoying when you load it up and then turn it on...and nothing.
