Bent pleats and some tears in the filter okay?
Don't guess if you're new at this, experienced hands only please. I am about to call the company and want to know if I need to be prepared to do battle.

I think it’s absolutely acceptable to send that back if there are tears. I had to send two 24x24’s back the first time for tears and damage. The company made me go to a ups store and ship them back, but they eventually replaced them, and sent them again with a different carrier

Bent pleats are ok but tears are not. Id just call them and tell them im sure if it is a reputable vendor they will work with you. More than likely it's fine but you more than likely paid for a new undamaged filter.

Bent fins can be workable but the tear is unacceptable. I'd be doing battle, if needed.

If you're lucky enough that they replace it and still let you keep the filter you've got, you can repair small tears with silicon and it will probably work fine. I have before.

It looks like I will most likely be getting a replacement and will get to keep this damaged unit since it was 250 just for truck freight shipping one way. So, why pay to get returned a damaged unit?
Problem is I apparently got the last of their stock, and it's like a 6 week lead time on a new one. So can I do a patch job on this unit and use it with success and save the new filter for later as someone suggested to me, or is the damage to this one significant enough to do as RR says and ditch it as a flowhood filter?
Quote:
RogerRabbit said: Repairing it will screw up the laminar flow. It will work fine as a general filter, but I wouldn't use a glued filter for sterile work or as a flowhood. RR
Can I/should I go ahead and patch it, finish the build and get rocking? Or should I abandon it and wait?

I certified clean air devices and BSCs for ten years. You can absolutely repair HEPAs and use them for sterile work. The problem you will have is knowing if your repair worked. We would leak test all repairs.
Since you already have the filter and are getting a new one, the best way to fix this is with a tube of RTV silicone. Get one that fits in a caulking gun, cut a small hole in the nozzle, and what you want to do is push the nozzle into that tear an inch or so, squeeze the trigger of the caulk gun to get the silicone behind the tear on the back side of the filter. Keep squeezing the trigger as you slowly pull the nozzle out of the filter. Stop dispensing silicone when the nozzle clears the filter. You should end up with a very small patch of silicone on the front of the filter, most of the patch will be on the back side. I hope I explained that in a way that’s understandable. After it cures, and your FH is assembled, lay some agar plates in front of the filter and see what grows. I think that’s the best you can donto test without some fairly expensive equipment.

Thanks for the response! So I want the silicone to come out the back of the filter? I pimp silicone in there from the front until I see it coming out the back and that is when I stop pumping on the pull out?

I can only speak from experience, the only flow hood I ever used was one I made a couple small repairs like that in the filter. It didn't cause any problems for me. Used it for quite a while.

Awesome Forrester thanks for chiming in that makes me feel much better. So the above description of how I should repair it sounds like the way to go? Insert tip into tear and squeeze silicone in there till it is coming out of the back?

Not so much silicone! You don’t want to see it coming out the back, you just want the repair on the backside of the filter paper. Push in about an inch, squeeze and pull out slowly, stop squeezing when the tip clears the tear. Just use enough silicone so it completely fills up the tear on the first go, you don’t want to be giving it the old in out.

Awwwww okay lol, that makes more sense!
And the bent portions that I don't see a tear? Should I do anything there?
Edit: Also, will this work or do I need to go buy a tube with a gun?

That kind is better than the guns, they suck to work with. Do pretty much what Roscoe said!
If you don't see a tear, you probably shouldn't glue, you don't want to overdo it. I'd get it up and running first with the least amount of repair, and then if you're having issues, maybe repair more if you suspect something. But I doubt you'll need any more fixes if you don't see a tear.

There ya go. I don't know why you need RTV but I'd believe Roscoe.
I think you'll be glad you're not messing with a caulking gun. I hate them with a passion... half the time it doesn't come out the tip and squishes all out the back instead. Then there goes your whole tube. Fun times.

Bad news...

Upon closer inspection of the back side when I went in to inspect every inch for the repair I found a SHIT TON of little tears... This filter is fucked it looks like. It's 6 weeks before I can get another one...
