Interesting. Seems we've all been growing NSS.

Wonder if Natalensis can be grown like cubes. Got a lc ready to go whenever I'm ready.

The foraging season in Kwa-Zulu Natal is only starting now. Hopefully we will find both (and a lot more) to document and record. Still very keen for the DNA results.

So if Guzmán is right, this means there is (at least)
1) P. natalensis, which is very similar or even identical to P. aztecorum, and
2) P. cubensis NSS, which should be similar to a cube.

If we look at Hobbit GDF's post

it looks like a cube, but PsiloPsychIn grow

as well as the one from jbgtaa

look completely different. Much more similar to aztecorum. So maybe the first one is P.cubensis NSS and the to others P.natalensis?
But without DNA analysis it's probably impossible to tell.

Maybe 2 and 3 pictures are a pan/cope. I think the vendor(s) have mislabeled or somewhere along the line a mislabeling has occurred.

I’m not very familiar with the Psilocybe aztecorum, not sure if found in South Africa, will look up. There is also a possibly of the P. aquamarina being also at play here. More research to be done.

Wow
Interesting twist on this one...
I must say this thread has all the makings of a soap opera...

Now
Will the REAL natalensis please stand  up....

I myself am looking foward to seeing some more solid info that 100% seperates these two varieties

My tubs always seem to have maybe 1/4 of the mushrooms with super pronounced gills running down the stipe a little. And then some don’t have it at all.

Definitely some strange fruits. I can see why it’s in question to be seperate but it could just be a product of mutant evolution right?

It could be but one of the biggest things for me is that every single grow has had myc punch through the liner and grow thick rhizo strands underneath it. Never had any cube or other species for that matter get through the liner once let alone 100% of the time. However woodlovers are the only type I haven’t grown yet and that’s what the myc under the liners reminds me of.

I still need to run one with hwfp, I’ve been saying it forever but after the first one went bad just never tried again.

It just makes no sense that it would waste so much energy on overlay.

I don't know what it is I just love to hate NSS. When it hits right its so awesome when it doesn't it sucks balls. I'll probably start another MS NSS once I get caught up on other projects.

I'd love to get my hands on a verified Ps. Natalensis.

Do you know if those were indoor or outdoor? I’ve never had fruits anything like that, like are almost always really long with small caps.

These ones on the bottom right are the closest I’ve had to normal cube pheno.

Thought I had some flat myc sectors going on but the more it grows the thicker the whole thing gets. I wonder if after enough transfers the myc would stop having so many layers to it.

Idk if anything thats been posted in here lately actually proves anything. Those mushroom observer pages just show some regular cubes and some regular pan cyan.

The mislabeling is another issue, but maybe it would be easier to just think of NSS as transkei or something. Just a cube. Some in here have grown something very cubelike. Others have grown some that are not cubelike. My samples have some very distinc non cube features. This he said she said isn't proving much. It needs to be sequenced.

Does anyone know or feel like looking up someone or some corporation that I can pay to do a sequencing?

I’ve grown a lot of cubes
Whatever I’m growing that I’m calling Psilocybe Natalensis is unique.  It doesn’t look like a classic cube.  Of course cubes are shape shifters ... they can be short and squat, long and tall, white, blue, yellow, brown, speckled, ... etc.

So obviously we can’t go on looks alone, but if I had to venture a guess I’d say what I’m growing is Psilocybe Natalensis...

Last I heard they had the sample but were waiting until they had more things that needed sequencing to get a bulk discount or something. Then a month or two later we got the results on the pan jams which I figured meant natal went in as well but still haven’t heard anything.

Psilo did you ever try yours?

One feature is the caps remain small even on maturity my biggest caps were small relative to the length of the stipes  - pan like proportions.
Another feature is that there is almost zero veil left on the stipe:

I never seem to find the time to eat shrooms!
I did have one report though.

They said they ate two small caps and stems and were tripping balls. Said they were PE strong!
