Dehydrating jerky and mushrooms at the same time?

I like to make jerky. Like. A LOT. Has anyone ever run a batch of jerky and a batch of mush through the dehydrator at the same time? Did the batch of mush smell/taste of jerky after that? Just considering who down the road might get passed a bag of mush that smells like beef jerky and I find the thought highly amusing

I do this all the time. But I alternate batches. And sanitize the racks everytime. I wouldn't do them at the same time.

Butter the pan and do both in the pan and recieve a kiss from god?

I had some weird issues with transfer of smell when doing mixed batches of foods in my dehydrators but nothing overwhelming. My ginger I did last time came out a little bit odd- but my mushrooms were unaffected. Oddly enough, my mushrooms smelled a little like strawberries when I mixed those batches in the same dehydrator (obviously in all cases on different trays...) but strawberries smelled fine. I'd imagine jerky might be strongly scented enough to give a little kick to your mush but that's the one thing I haven't run with them yet because I couldn't bring my mind to accept the concept. .

I think next time I will put a small amount of mush in with the jerky, then store it for a while, and sniff/taste test it to see if I can still tell.

That sounds like a winner. Fucking good lord I want some jerky now. Been forever since I made any and this post may be responsible for that changing... Beef is so goddamn expensive here. Jeez louise.

I just had a thought, if you have a top mounted fan setup for your dehydrator then you could layer things by smell profile.
For instance:
You layer the bottom racks with mush, then you could take some thinnly sliced brined or seasoned potatoes on the next rack, and the very top layers get the beef jerky which is the strongest in the scent and flavor department so that a majority of the beef jerky smell gets vented right away, and the jerky is the least likely to be noticeably effected by either things dehydrating down below it, because it tastes so strong already. Then, the potatoes having been brined and/or seasoned would absorb little smell or taste from the mush below it as the mush is more mild than the brine/seasoning of the taters, and said taters would likely not be affected to much by the jerky sitting above them since it vents upwards, and if it does absorb a light touch of jerky goodness due to proximity it might make these soon to be potato chips even tastier. While the mush on the bottom layers closest to the heat, and with a buffer layer of potatoes before the top layer(s) of jerky being vented directly under the exhaust fan, I am thinking the mush will be largely unaffected in the taste/smell department if you layer it like this and have a top mounted fan set up.
Most bland scent and flavor profile at the bottom, and work your way up to a top mounted fan?
What do you guys think? No more half full dehydrators, but still keep that pure mush flavor???

I think you should keeps things separate. Just get another cheap dehydrator for food. Also why screw up the flavor and texture of your dank jerky with gross ass mushroom chunks.

I'd have to agree with above advice unfortunately... (though the "grew up dirt ass poor" part of me cringes in revulsion at the prospect of energy waste). Even with my (RIP) former Cabella's unit that worked from front to back across trays installed of the usual vertical-flow orientation, I got transference. Unfortunate, but true.

i do apples when i do mushrooms & never ran into any issues. i don’t think you’d have to worry abt the flavor being affected tbh i don’t think it’s that extreme. jerky may be different tho, doesn’t the meat go in raw?

Truth be told as I read the post before yours I knew it was true...
I have dehydrated lots of different foods at the same time and it does for sure make a big difference in tatse, and mush is absorbent so it wouldn't fare very well if things are less than perfect.
While I laughed about the thought, I wouldn't want anyone to get a bag of mush that smells like jerky or anything other than mush.
Oh well, it was a fun way to occupy a few moments of thought lol
Thanks boys!

Edit: Uh oh, I think I just came up with my new signature
What do you think?
