ID needed, liberty caps
    #26928606 - 09/10/20 04:24 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hi all,

I've only got interested in mushrooms, any fungi, just three days ago, so excuse me for the ignorance. I'm almost 40 and have never ever had any kind of mushroom in my mouth :-D as ignorant as you can get.

Need help with id of what I think might be semilanceata.

I wasn't 100% sure, so I just scattered them a bit and left. So no spores print, sorry. What confused me is they seem to grow multiple stems of a single point, and couldn't notice any bluing after scaring.

Also got these others yesterday, which I'm positive they are semilanceata. Drying as I write. Correct me if I might wrong. These did have separate stems and were visibly scaring blueish in places around the cap edge and bottom of the stem. And the caps where lighter greyish, contrary to the first ones in this post that were almost intense orange/brown.

Got a spore print for these, but it's a night time now, don't think it's worth taking a picture. It's very dark warm grey. I wouldn't call it purple or brown, but it has this reddish hint/tint/shift (a warm grey), definitely not blueish (cold grey).

Thank you. Hopefully this all makes sense.

Nothing active.. looks like Coprinellus Micaceus to me

All of them? Or just the first one picture? Because I saw mica caps too during my hunt. They seemed to be dense, overlapping each other. Which was kind of true for the ones in the first picture, and that contributed to my doubt and decision to leave them.

What about the others in the 2nd and 3rd pictures? They just "felt different", if I was looking for Coprinellus Micaceus, I wouldn't think they were.

The thing is I have never seen a positive ided liberty cap, so not a lot of feeling about that. Long way ahead, but I started liking it as a hobby.

Libs are tiny compared to C.Micaceus, about 1/5th the size. All your specimens are Corprinoid of some species, probably mica caps.

A lib will be about as long as your index finger, mostly, the stem will be thin and supple, not brittle in any way.

Good luck and keep hunting

The gridded paper is 5mm per grid. The whole sheet is about 1/4th of A4/letter sized piece of paper. I can see how that might have been confusing. It's a notepad sheet.

So all the specimens are shorter than my index finger.

Thank you. And I will :-)

I cover a lot of area by foot at work, daily, I enjoy walking. The job doesn't pay well, but it's my favorite job nevertheless. And now I got a hobby to come along with it :-)

For Psilocybe semilanceata the cap should be between 0.5-2.5 cm broad and stem is only 30-100 mm long by 0.75-3 mm thick.  A good way to learn to find new species in my opinion is to just keep following all of the ID requests on this forum. Seeing what other people are posting when they are hunting is a good way to learn look-alikes as well as good habitat and defining features of what you were actually looking for.  Keep at it and welcome to the Shroomery.

I had to translate what supple means (love and hate for English not being a mother tongue), but yes. I was afraid too touch it at first, and tried using my keys to cut them to no success, the grass around would get cut and the mushroom would just spring back like a rubber. Don't laugh please :-) had to pull them by hand, that's how I know they had separate stems. Thats the ones in bottom pictures.

Top ones must be what you say. They were different. The bottom ones - still not convinced if I communicate here properly :-)

Don't worry about not touching the mushrooms you find...it's exceedingly rare to find one of the species that would cause any harm from touch alone

I found a US dime and a penny for size comparison. The spores print here looks natural color. You can see the rest. Was open air drying 48 hours.

So hypothetically I pick/inspect the most poisonous mushroom, then use my hands as usual, smoke, eat, having nowhere to wash them, and nothing will ever happen? Sounds like these deadly mushrooms are not so deadly then :-)
