a2g vs g2g vs lc2g - side by side anyone?
    #26927919 - 09/10/20 09:46 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Would love to see a side by side comparison of agar to grain vs grain to grain vs lc to grain.

Interested in colonization speeds and success rates.

I am going to try this in the near future, but am wondering if Anyone here has pics and/or can share results?

Thanks!

All LC to grains I've done have taken at least a month to even begin to show any Myc growth.

My agar to grain usually shows growth within a few days.

Haven't done G2G but would think it will grow just as fast as agar or even faster.

Lol your LC is bad then. I'm usually ready to spawn to bulk 7 days after LC inoculation.

Liquid Inoculate can get me colonized jars in 9-10 days.

This is my go-to form of inoculate now because 1 agar puck can do 10 jars without having to g2g.

Works for me on the only two grains I use: WBS and oats

Link in sig 👍

One agar puck can do nearly limitless jars with LC, unless you're talking about LI. I do about 25 jars per 250ml which I inoculate with just the tiniest piece of tissue, so one puck of agar would get me about 250,000 jars I'd say.

I'll second that something's fucked if your LC takes that long.. G2G is the fastest by far IME.

For me, this is the upper end of LC speeds. Lower end is about 2-3 weeks, similar to an agar wedge. Depends on the culture and amount of LC. G2G is always about a week though unless I forget to shake after xfer.

And to the OP, these methods aren't necessarily competitive, but complementary. My process goes like agar -> LC -> grains -> G2G -> spawn. I skip the G2G if I don't need more culture ofc. But LC doesn't replace G2G, imo; G2G is always a little faster, and I can basically be pretty sure the parent jar is clean without testing it on a plate, unlike LC.

Ime g2g is fastest overall, but lc holds the all time record. If everything aligns I’ve had quarts finish in 4-5 days with lc. Most of the time it takes 3 days just to recover though.

My g2g and LC jars are really close but LC comes out slightly ahead. ~7 days is pretty much the norm, sooner if I get heavy handed with the pour.

My weekly process is grow out on agar til I'm happy with it. Each dish gets a small piece cut out and put in LC, then cut in half and each go to a grain jar. g2g those two jars out to 20 and the bottle of LC will go into 30 grain jars when it's ready. The a2g jars take at least two weeks before they are ready to g2g.

Thanks for all the input guys. Really helpful.

CubePusher my process is similar to yours: agar -> LC -> grains -> spawn

Because of my current limitation in an SAB i have forgone the g2g, but my flowhood has arrived which will make life easier. I didnt really feel comfortable g2g in the SAB for some reason. It also wasnt very efficient that way especially with bags.

I have always found LC to be the sweet spot with extending your cultures and inoculation speeds. The downfall is you have to trust your sterile tek, that is unless you test on agar which adds a few days to the process. The benefit of that is also another (hopefully) clean agar plate to work with. I wanted to see if this was the consensus?
