My UVC sterilizing unit
    #26926379 - 09/09/20 01:36 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Just thought I would show you my UVC sterilizer that I built. Cost was about $800.

Uses would be mask cleaning, instrument cleaning, glove sanitization even petridish processing. Saftey features include pressure circuit switches to avoid exposure. 2x 36 w germicidal bulbs. 5 min solid state timer.

That's awesome! Have you tried running used petri dishes through the unit and attempted to reuse them? That would be killer if you could consistently save your PS plates from the trash and just rotate through a batch of 500 recycled, sterile dishes <3

This is very interesting. Pricey but I'm curious to know how it works.

UV is the one method of sanitizing that never gets certified as a sterilizing method because it doesn't work like that.
Good for use in conjunction with other processes, especially for water decontamination. But for anything, else even hard nonporous surfaces, there's far better options

Not sure I see the point but it looks cool. I'd throw my tooth brush in there every day but dont know if id trust it for mush cult. Whats wrong with the PC? Put a mask in a a grain jar and boom! same shit. Or am I missing something? So you wipe the whole case down with ISO then open it in flow? Do you use a falme on tools still?

Those facemasks have occlusions especially around the metal parts that make trying to sanitize them with light pretty moot imo.

They have been using UVC to sterilize N95's and is appoved by the CDC as an acceptable method during the shortage
1 J/cm2 dose is adequate to kill 99.999 % of viable organisms on N95 up to 10 times or more without degradation of particulate filtration, straps being wiped down with sanitizing solution. This unit was originally built for that reason during the early covid days. It will adequately kill anything on a petridish with a much lower dose. I have used it as a final sterilizing step to ensure plastic petridishs are clean. Opening the unit infront of a flow hood to prevent contamination after sanitization of the outside of the unit. UVC does not go through plastic efficiently thus leaving the lids off is needed. Saran wrap allows about 50% dose through a single layer so one could wrap the dishes in a single layer and increase run time if using a still box, allowing to transfer to still box if no flow is available.

seems like a total waste of 800$ for that kind of money id have built a bad ass fh and prolly had $$ left over. personally i dont use masks ever and to me re using gloves is no big  deal and il do it once in a great while but il  just give a light iso hand rub down. i never even bother actually sterilizing scalpels either i just  soak and wipe down the handles with iso and the blades are flamed so 🤷🏼 and besides i trust my pc/sterilizer more than a pulp fiction box. not downin ya for using it i just think that its kinda pointless is all and that $$ could have been way better spent. if u have good technique and practice good methods your contam rate is gnna be lower than using 10 of those things.

Who said I paid for it? My employer paid for it as a prototype during the start of covid incase we were forced to reuse n95s. It's been repurposed to my needs since we never got to that point. As for pcing plastic petridishs enjoy cleaning melted plastic 🤣

Here is a study from a reputable lab for anyone intersted in UVC sterilizing effectiveness.

This is the most badass sanitizer/sterilizer I've ever seen in mush cult
Wouldn't it be really easy to prove it's effectiveness? I think so, not that I doubt it.
We are tho wasting tons of plastic petris and if there was a way to reduce waste I'm for it

If anyone wants info on how to make one I would be happy to offer what I've learned. As others have said its pricey for what it does but it can be made fairly cheap especially for those who are in the US, as well as if you have the hard case on hand and basic tools already. It could be made for less.

We should definitely at least have a write up on this site about how to construct one and the science beind it and it's effectiveness. I could dig that.

I am a little ashamed to say it but I tried to sterilize petris back in the day. Idk exactly what I was thinking, but I was really inexperienced and had no idea of the basic principles of mycology. I tell you what that was a mistake I never made again. Agar and melted plastic is a mess. I hope im not the only one whose ever done it lol.

There's a reason petri dishes are gamma or EO sterilized. UVC isn't so new that it hasn't been considered. It's just not reliable for things that need to be guaranteed sterile.

Regarding UVGI
Quote:

"Sterilization" is often misquoted as being achievable. While it is theoretically possible in a controlled environment, it is very difficult to prove and the term "disinfection" is generally used by companies offering this service as to avoid legal reprimand. Specialist companies will often advertise a certain log reduction, e.g., 6-log reduction or 99.9999% effective, instead of sterilization. This takes into consideration a phenomenon known as light and dark repair (photoreactivation and base excision repair, respectively), in which a cell can repair DNA that has been damaged by UV light.

Can you do pre-pour with borosilicate dishes or do you still have to wait to pour after PCing?

'Cause being able to pre-pour is the only thing that could ever make me wanna spend that kind of money on petris

No. I pour. And i searched and searched and found a very reasonable deal on them.

My flow cabinet has a uvc light on it that runs for 20 mins at a time. I give my plates a nice lil bath once they've cooled.
