Black morel LC question
    #26927103 - 09/09/20 08:23 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Hi fellow mushroom lovers,

I'm experimenting with black morel in the hopes of establishing some outdoor patches.

I was amazed by the mycelium on agar. At first I thought my culture was contaminated when I saw the wispy, brownish colour and presence of sclerotia. Turns out its clean and these are good signs  I now have 4 bags of spawn fully colonised and I can see sclerotia on the surface of the spawn bags, it's looking good so far!

My next step is to inoculate outdoor beds of mixed hardwood sawdust and charred hardwood.

However, I am seeking insight on the following:

I transferred some agar wedges of various gourmet species to LC yesterday, but I noticed that within a day the morel LC has turned somewhat cloudy with small clumps throughout - it looks like a yeast starter! Meanwhile, the jars with my other species are still clear.

I'm generally confident in my technique and use a flow hood but morels are new ground for me. I know it's super fast growing on agar, but I would usually assume an LC that goes cloudy overnight is contaminated.

I will transfer some of the morel LC to agar in the future to see if there are contaminants, but for now I am interested to know if it is normal to see this type of growth in morel LC.

Any knowledge shared is much appreciated

I’m curious, are these from something you got from a vendor or a wild sample?

I was under the impression morels were extremely hard to grow. This should be interesting.
