Fresh-ground BRF is very fast as well. When I do rye or WBS, i soak 24 hours, rinse, simmer for 30 minutes, rinse again, and then PC 45 minutes, with no added water. I find WBS is much better than Rye.

I find simmering, soaking for 24 hours and then draining a total waste of time. I just add the correct water content to the millet and then PC.
Call me lazy but it works for me!

imho the best way to go if you are a first timer use the finch seed/brf/flax seed meal/verm cakes way faster colonizer than brf/verm and seems to just be better and they rock for casings as well the only thing is the color makes it a bit hard to see contams in comparisson to normal brf verm mixes

millet (main component in birdseed) contains lots of trypophan precursor, useful for making the magic chemical ingredients that make some shrooms 'tastier'. so some swear that millet-grown shrooms will be stronger. i don't know about that - there's nothing wrong with brf in my opinion - easy starting tool, simple to obtain, hard to fuck up. that's why so many of us recommend the pftek to first time growers.
