Mycelium leather
    #26925861 - 09/09/20 08:12 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Not sure where to post this but I didn’t find anywhere that seemed like a better fit.

Anyway does anybody have experience making mushroom leather? I want to try it but so far the only method I’ve found was kinda vague and involves basically filling a tray with lc and letting the surface colonize into a mat.

I was hoping to find somebody who’s done this before but if not Ill write up a tek if I end up figuring out a reasonable method on my own.

Not too sure but I heard that Paul Stamets hat is made from the cap of a mushroom. I think he was talking about the process of how it was made on Joe Rogan's podcast

Sory for the bump! I was stalking your posts and found this one.

I have info!

I hope you really REALLY get to makensomething out of this. It would be amazing to see somebody make a thread around here.

Good luck!

I sliced up a scoby from a giant batch of kombucha one time.  Put it in my Excalibur and left it 24 hours. That shit was tuffer then raw hide.
I never tried making anything with mushroom myc. I would bet an LC filtered with paper making screens would yield some sort of starting point. sounds fun the play around with.
Pauls hat I believe is a shelf fungus that was boiled? As said above he does talk about it on Joe Rogans podcast.

Pls allow me to revive this thread.

Paul's hat is made of amadou and is traditionally made by beating the mushrooms, thus, spread out the material and voila.

Ive been obsessing myself making mycelial leather and would like to produce small articles of it, too. Maybe make a coin purse or whatever...

I shall buy some ganoderma spawn soon and experiment with it.

All the mycelium leather I know about is reishi mycelium which is forced to grow airily. Once there is a giant fluffy slab of it they slice it off with a big sharp horizontal blade or bandsaw then press it. I expect there are a few other steps but thats the gist of it. I know of at least two companies that employ this method.

Theres another one in indonesia if you didnt include them in your count.

From the link above, biofabforum, its a bit complicated, and too 'scientific' if you know what I mean. Can we just grow it in powdered hemp hurds and agar, make a couple of those, peel the sheets off, join them under pressure? I call it Lazymans mycoleather. Haha anyway, Im still a noob but this sort of things interest me. I just hope something can be developed for amateur mycologists to try out.

Interesting... I haven't heard of the Indonesian one. The two I'm thinking of are in the San Francisco Bay Area. It does seem a bit more complicated than one can do at home unless you're down to make some specialized equipment. I'm sure there are enough industrious Shroomerites to figure something out...

Welllll... you're not wrong. I'm also super curious in myco leather though. But maybe the loco shrooms made me interested in that too? Which came first, the shroom or the shroom?

Well... The loco shrooms made me frequent this forums site! Hah! Never really signed up to other forums sites all over the web. I kinda liked it here. Teeehee. Probably because of the killer teks, for my scholarly research.

You and me both good sir. You and me both. I don't like (or frequent) other forums nearly as much as I do this one. I came for the loco and stayed for the community, and sweet sweet teks.

:leocheers:

So have any ideas for how to build an aerial growth chamber? I think some sort of plexiglas box with a close fitting lid could do the trick.

I couldn’t find specifics on any processes yet. I had assumed it was a big lc that grew mats on the surface but then I found an article about a place that uses some kind of frame.

I’m guessing they inoculate some kind of puffed rice or cellulose type substrate that’s shaped into huge blocks, and then compress it once it’s colonized.

I was starting some experiments when I made the thread but got sidetracked and never got anywhere.

There has to be some kind of patent we can get a hold of.

I read an article where they did like A.k.a says: had a porous substrate that I guess was precisely formed in a mold, then inoculated it. They were making a substitute for plastic foam packaging though, not leather.

I presume this aerial myc that they press to make myco-leather is the same concept with the vegan mushroom bacon, they just dont compress it, slice it thin, and fry it like bacon. Ecovative makes them.

So when you finally get around to making the foamy-type aerial myc, you can have mushroom leather and mushroom 'bacon', at the same time. Sounds yummm.
