Oyster mushroom for transparent bags
    #26925775 - 09/09/20 06:52 AM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Hi everyone,

So I have been dealing with this problem for a very long time now, and I have tried changing so many variables in my process, and nothing seems to solve the issue. I have already posted about it before. The problem is, I grow oysters on master's mix, in 5 pound transparent autoclavable filter patch bags, and whenever I cut slits or pokes holes on the bags for the mushroom to grow, I get pins in many different places, including but not limited to the holes I poke. I grow pink oysters too and they always pin exclusively through the slits I make.

So I was reading the books I have here looking for a clue and I read on Stamets something saying that such is a very common problem, and that there are some specific strains of oysters that are less photosensitive and, because of that, will give much higher preference to growing though the holes you poke, instead of growing anywhere because of the incidence of light. Such strains would be ideal for growing oyster on transparent bags.

Has anyone ever had an experience along this lines? Like, has anyone tried growing multiple strains of oysters, and has found out that there are specific strains that are more likely to pin though holes and not everywhere? I really would like to know what that strain would be.

Now that could be an interesting concept

Your problem is where you are slicing the bag. If you slice on the side of the bag the sub will be uneven. So there will be little divots in the sub that will allow for air to get into the bag and create pins. So what I do is I colonize the bag sitting normally with the bottom of the bag on the bottom and the top of the bag on top. This will create a flat bottom with no divots. When I fruit my bags I release the cable tie (I use releasable cable ties) and push out as much air as possible and reseal the bag. Then I flip the bag over and slice the bottom of the bag from corner to corner taking care to not lift the bag. Lay your scalpel as flat as possible so you use as much of the blade as you can. Laying the scalpel flat will help with not lifting the bag. In other words, don't use the tip of the scalpel lay the sharp part as flat as possible. Any air that gets in the bag will create pins under the bag. So you want just the slice to be exposed to air with the bag tight against the sub. Then I fruit with the bottom of the bag on top and the top of the bag on my wire shelving.

I have tried slicing the bags every possible way. Sometimes i get pins inside the bag, pressing against the plastic, even before i cut any slits in the bag. Its not uncommon for me to open a hole in the side of the bag and get pins in the bottom as well, where the sub in maximally pressed against the plastic. I have tried cutting slits in the bottom and sometimes i get pins in the sides as well. So yeah, I dont know, what you are saying might help, but does not resolve the issue.

SHROOMSISAY01 you dont get any pins whatsoever inside the bag? I know you grow oysters on masters mix, right? What strain do you grow? Can i get a pick of one of your bags slit open the way you are describing?

I do get pins in the bag if I wait for way too long to fruit. But otherwise, I do not get pins in my bags. Where are you getting your bags from?

Yes, I grow on masters mix. Sorry, I don't have a pic. I stopped growing for a while. My sales were very poor since all this crap started with the unwanted Chinese import. I am concentrating on selling my humidification system.

I mainly grow Amycel 3015 and aloha Elma.

So, whats up with the crappy chinese import? I've read somewhere that chinese shiitake logs were causing a big problem for US block producers, but I thought that was a problem restricted to the shiitake market. Is the same thing happening in the oyster mushrooms market?

I can't offer info about strains, but some suppliers produce black bags like this:

https://unicornbags.com/product/oyster-bag-black-box-of-1000/

these are designed to prevent light from triggering pinning, but because there are holes pre cut they may be more contaminant prone or require higher spawning rates. I have not used these.

Many species of pleurotus will make pins everywhere. Don’t worry much about it, it will put all of its efforts towards the sweet spots once it finds em.

So what do you about them Dancing with Bears, you just ignore the pins u dont want? I feel like yields drop substantially if you do that.

The reason I asked where you are getting your bags is because it sounds like either you have a bacterial problem making them want to pin early or you are getting to much air exchange through the patch. Or you are waiting too long for fruiting them. Maybe I am wrong and it might be a common problem but I have grown many oyster mushrooms and I have never had a problem of them pinning in the bag. Are the bags fully colonized when they pin? If not I would try to PC the bags longer to kill any contamination in the bag that may make them fruit early.

Which ones do you find do this? Because I have never had this problem. I am curious if it is something I have not grown. So I wouldn't know about it.

Yes I have had cultures that behave quite differently in this way.

Not specific to oyster only, and I can't remember what cultures I was working with then... but definitely play with different cultures and I think you can find one that might behave better.

Like I said I have no problem with pinning in the bag so here are to ones I have grown. Amycel 3015, Aloha Elma, Aloha Yellow, Aloha Pink. The pink was not a good fruiter but I don't think any pink oysters are good fruiters. I have dishes if anyone needs them. They are not free.

How was the color on the pinks?  I'm just getting into medicinal/gourmet ..I've tried two varieties of djamor.  Agreed, the yield is never special, however I've got great colors from golds, and a single blue culture.
Just wondering if it's something I'm doing or a more common issue?  I've seen plenty of vibrant, mature pinks whereas mine have been more white with pink edges/hues.

The brighter the light the more color. I have 4 bulbs that are on my wall. I had good color but the yield was not good so I don't like to grow them. I here all pinks have a low yield.

I'm aware of the light/color relationship,I asked because both strains I've tried have lack luster color, although my golds and blues in the same tent have great color?

As far as the smell...golds>pinks!! My experience with the pink smell is almost like a slightly sweet rubber smell? If that makes any sense...not bad,but not great

That's how I've always described it, like a pencil eraser.  It's weird for sure...

Basically that yeah!, It's still a nice smell, but in my limited experience the gold smell has won me over,so far.

So I asked T.R. Davies (from Earth Angel Mushrooms) a question related to this topic in one for his videos, although not exactly the same question, and got lucky enough to have him answer it, so I thought I might share it here.

I asked: "How do you get them not to pin on the sides under the plastic? My oysters, most of the time, pin wherever they want, not where i cut the bag. Ive tried everything."

His answer:"bring them to the grow room a little earlier.  Also, make sure you are keeping your. humidity high after you cut your bags.  I often cover my bags with plastic after i cut them.  This keeps 100% humidity on the exposed area,  and keeps excess air flow from injuring the exposed mycelium."

Both good ideas for sure.  Anything you can do to keep the bag stuck tight to the substrate will help.  Soon as it gets loose and there's airspace, it's gonna pin there.
