First Grow Ever - guide me, oh wise ones?
    #26925057 - 09/08/20 05:46 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guys,

First, love the community, appreciate the wealth of knowledge, and fully respect the maturity of the veterans here.
High vibes to all. :flowerchild:

–––––––––––

So this is my first grow ever.
Will be using a 66qt Pasty EZdial monotub.
Coir/verm sub.
No casing unless you guys think I should.
Climate is about 40% humidity on average.

Here are where my spawn bags sit as of 9/8:

The middle two bags are super rhizo.

The outer two, not as much, but still clean growth. (Is that a metabolite in the corner of the second one?)

Noc'd with 2 LC syringes of GT.
Grain spawn is from shroomsupply.
The mycelium has exploded since I introduced a 12h light cycle.

My question is about when I should break up the grain.
Should I go ahead and break up the ones that have colonized roughly 70%?
Or should I wait for the others to catch up and break them all up at the same time?

I'm going off of the guide found here:
https://www.shroomsupply.com/easiest-mushroom-grow-kit-instructions#fruiting-conditions
"Step 7: At this point of colonization (70-75%), break the grain up with your hands through the outside of the bag. This will distribute the mycelium and speed up the last phase of colonization. Do not perform this step until mycelial colonization has reached a minimum of 70%, doing so can stall growth."

Thanks for any and all help you can give me.
I really appreciate this community.

PS- That's a Fluorite crystal hanging out in the middle of those spawn bags. Crystal TEK writeup coming after this grow is complete?

That spawn is way too wet. Make your own, buying preprepped grain is skipping steps and asking for disaster. I wouldnt shake em. They probably won't recover

Right on.
I already have a 50 lb bag of Milo that I'll be sterilizing in jars for my next grow.
Could it be too wet cause I noc'd each bag with half a syringe of LC?
Thanks for the reply, and letting me know not to shake them.

Idk, never used bags or lc. But it's possible. Have pics of the grain pre inoculation?

Top pic the first 3 don't look terrible that last bag something is wrong with it looks like bacteria or grain being to wet. I'd shake them now. they look like small bags. If they recover from the shake with no signs of contamination spawn them

No I don't, but there was a lot less visible moisture in the bags all the way up until I let the space the bags are colonizing in get to about 86 degrees for a couple hours. The mycelium was also exploding in growth during that period, and has had continued steady growth since. (Exothermic reaction probably raising temps as well?) I'm thinking the visible moisture came out of the grain at that point.

I think you're right about the last bag being bacterial.

After closer inspection, I think it's just slow growth.

I would really like to get another cultivator's opinion on whether I should go ahead and shake them all, or just shake the ones that are farther along.

Thanks for all the help, friends!

This is way too much, especially with these small bags. A few ml is sufficient.
Still, syringes are/can be inherently dirty, so you always playing a game.
Too much moisture and bacteria both slow down the growth of mycelium, just what you
are observing now.
Personally I like to shake my grain jars as soon as possible (5-10% colonization),
but most people seem to do it anywhere between 20-50%. Just shake them now and if they
recover well, you might get some fruits from them.

yes it's bacteria but I think you can spawn it in another tub and probably it will fruit, I do not use casing but I always put coir/ver on top (pseudo casing).

I can shake when you want, I do not need to wait until it's 70 %

Update:

All bags shaken at ~4AM EST 9/9.
Grain does not look too wet at all.
All bags were colonized between 60-80% - to my surprise.
All bags smelled of mushy goodness! (Even the slower colonizer.)

Will update again in 24-48hrs.
Thanks guys for all the replies!
I really appreciate it, you have no idea.

I shake my bags a hellva lot sooner than you did. I prolly wouldve shaken them twice by now.

You'll know if they're usable by wheather they recover or not.

You shouldn't smell anything that isnt fully colonized. That's a good way to let contams in.

Looking forward to what comes out of it.
I may do different tubs if the one bag comes out wack.

Definitely, thanks man.
I'll shake sooner next time for sure.

Could smell them through the filter patches.
Didn't even occur to me to try until I caught a whiff of it while breaking up the mycelium.
They all smell the same, they all smell like mushrooms.
I'm encouraged.

Thanks so much for the replies, everyone!

Update:

9/12
Bags are def pretty wet, but they look healthy and are recovering quickly!
Excited to put to bulk when they’re ready!

This one is still a little concerning, but the mycelium has recovered literally just as quickly as the others, if not quicker.
It seems that the growth is just a bit tomentose compared to the others.
There is some discoloration which seems like it could be bacterial, along with some metabs. There are also some burst grains in there so maybe that could be it?
Mind you, this is my first grow, and I have no idea wtf I’m talking about!
What say you, Mycosages?

Quick question.

Fixing to spawn the tub.
Should I just top fruit that bacterial bag, or go ahead and spawn it?
Leaning towards casing it and top fruiting it, but wanted an opinion.

Using coir/verm sub.
And even tho that bag is bacterial, the mycelium is very hearty.

Late 9/13:

Thanks for everyone’s help.

There's likely bacteria to some degree in all of them, but as mentioned it looks like it's being fought off pretty well.  I'd just spawn as you planned and they'll probably do fine.
