Another pressure cooker down the drain.
    #26924994 - 09/08/20 04:56 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

I decided to prepare my first batch of spawn bags last night, and subsequently and bulged another presto. I prepared 4 bags loading 2kg of dry grain into each of my bags along with 750ml of water each. The bags were quite big (21 inches tall and 14.6 inches wide) And being my first time when I folded them they were nowhere near perfect.  They were quite a tight fit when I put them in to the pc and the bottom ones were pretty much submerged in water, now my question is because of my bad fold did water seep into my bags during cooking subsequently running my pc dry? Or did the sides get melted/popped due to the tight fit and the spawn expanding and then running my pc dry? I was using a 23qt presto.

Dude my 23 quart Presto loses water like fucking crazy. I have to add water enough to where the jars are almost floating, or it'll be next to empty when I finish the cycle. I'm also at like 6000' elevation. With bags needing to run longer, I can easily see the Presto going dry if you don't add a stupid amount of water.

I think your bags ruptured first, then the grain soaked up all the water/got burned at the bottom.
This is millet right? This also happens when cooking it for consumption, it will instantly burn
if heated too long or not stirred constantly.
Did your bags touch the walls of the PC? Did you turn down the heat when reaching 15psi so the rocker
barely made any noise, or was it venting steam all the time?

I spend more on PC fuses than I did on the PC itself! Scared the crap out of me the first couple of times. I use a Mirro I bought at Goodwill. Its old school but works like a champ. Even getting blown out twice its still fine. Now I know exactly how much, how long. The problem was not enough water because I did not want to submerge the bottom of my jars. You should be able to hear when its running low on water the weight bounces constantly. At 15psi it bounces every couple of seconds just a bit.

I'm guessing you didn't use something to elevate the bottom.

You should throw layers of jar lid rings three deep under the metal plate thing with holes in it that sits in the bottom of your presto so that it has a reservoir of water that isn't displaced by the jars or in this case the bags. Especially with bags, because once you pack them in there it hardly takes any water to make it "look" full. This will fix that issue.

Also, are you putting anything on top of the top bags to prevent them from blocking the vent? I use a dinner plate facing down.

Id say you ran her dry then the bags melted. I could never get bags to work in a presto but lots of folks do so take that for what its worth. So you have 2 prestos and they are both bulged out on the bottom? I ran one for 8 months that was round as a damn basket ball cause I ran it dry like a month after I bought it. Used it a lot. But I did run it on the gas burner on the side of the grill out back just in case lol. Good luck on the next one.
