I have never fanned a casing yet. I grow in styrofoam coolers. perlite:spawn:casing sandwich max of four inches total. Leave top on cooler for two weeks or until you see mycelium popping through casing in several areas. Top has square cut out with plastic sheet attached to allow light in. I gradually remove the lid more and more after pinning occurs. Removing the lid to mist, is usually enough air exchange. The only contamination problems I have experienced are introduced by me, touching casing layer, improper sterilization, wood sticks in peat, etc.. By no means is this the best way to grow, but I have had great success over a long period of time. Up to 10 grams dry per cup of rye grain dry. Only experimenting I tend to do is with different species, all using this basic system. Combining Stametes miniculture, with Mckenna's grain system. I have used rye seed, straw, compost, wheat grain all work in this system. Don't hate me for being a minimalist when it comes to fruiting. I spend most of my time with agar and strain selection. I just fruit to test these strains. So many shrooms, so few users!!!!!

10 grams for a cup of rye is not exactly stellar yields,
i can get 5 dry out of a 1/4 cup of ground rice.
but anyway, speaks/w/thunder, nothing wrong with fanning your caing before the mycellia grows thru. one can still get cobweb anytime.
