I've been trying to figure out what time of year I want to go visit with my daughter in upstate New York and September looks like a great time to hunt. Anyone ever hunt the Corning/Elmira area or around Tioga Pennsylvania? I love the area up there and have been fossil hunting many times in winter, but never had the opportunity to hunt mushrooms.

Found some voids up by the ny border near Erie earlier this year. Lots of mushrooms grow up that way. Also like finding fossils from the lakes, I got a little collection. Been wanting to go up there to see if I can find any libs growing in the north part of PA

I would think that the northern Pennsylvania New York border would be awesome to hunt. I started going to the Corning area back in 1990 to visit my ex wife's sister, she's a Southern transplant to area, but her husbands family have worked at the Corning glass works since they 1st opened long ago. That entire area is gorgeous, but I was surprised to find out how contaminated the water ways are in the area from old mines. scared me enough to not want to eat any fish or game and now it makes think about the mushrooms.

Many of the rivers around western pa, Pittsburgh specifically were completely void of life from the coal and steel industries. Many of these places would have been paradise for the natives, unlimited foodsources and lumber supply from the floodplains. It's a shame the whites desecrated this land. Our ancestors would be disappointed.

I'm surprised I haven't been able to find ovoids yet. I figured they would be easier than caerulipes.
I've only checked a few areas but they seemed like the right habitat. Usually on the delaware river or a stream flowing directly from it.
I probably haven't covered enough ground, it took me 4 years to find these and that was thanks in part to a post Icyurmt made in the 2020 thread about tracking how many logs he searched vs how many clusters he found, and thanks to the family that showed up behind me on the trail that wasn't social distancing so I went back and checked a few more beech trees while I waited for them to move on.

There are voids there but far less common than in the Ohio river valley when they are basically the only mushrooms that grow for a month.

What region did you find these in? I have friends that find them in Allegany and others around Ithaca and Watkins Glen, but i haven't come by them yet. Hopefully this weekend will be good for me.
