Went to an old favorite spot in the Dublin mountains today. Not been picking in years. Only found one solitary liberty cap. Very dry and bright. Any other dubs out there? How you getting on this year?

I can't say as don't live there, but have been reading on another thread that people are having good success around Johnnie Foxes pub.
Gathering decent amounts in North Leitrim, have been out since the start of the month. Like everything this year, I think the West is about 2 to 3 weeks behind the east coast, hoping so anyway.
Happy picking

Hey steelo check this page http://https://www.shroomery.org/12510/Psilocybe-semilanceata Try and take some pics of them in their habitat, the gills, pics like you took and some where you can see the top a bit better.
The gill pics would help determine them from Protostrapharia and Panaeolus in addition to many other factors. Were they this color when you picked them or did they dry out whitish?

Thanks CHUCK.HNTR. Those pics were fresh, they've dried out a bit darker alright. I think perhaps best to "chuck" them? Will try to get better pics of more. Great link there with examples

Quick look in a good spot we found last year and the whole field was covered with them! About 800ft above sea level in wicklow & full of sheep & deer droppings. Did a 40min pick and this is what we got, just under 90g fresh weight.

I got a few of these after a rainy day, found where grassland meets forest. Gills looked purple-brown (emphasis on the purple) when first picked and now just brown, creamy color, a little dry now but when first picked had a slimy cap. definitely a nipple there. Any ID?

Still fairly light on the ground down my usual spot in Waterford. Took me 90 mins for this small batch. Still though, 90 minutes of fresh mountain air, and a few hours fun over the weekend, time well spent.

At last! What a difference a couple of days can make. I've been out over the same ground regularly over the last month or more, coming home with one or two every time, until yesterday. Haven't seen a flush like this before in a couple of the places. Got around 100 in an hour and a half or so, 150-300m above sea level, NW Ireland, rough sheep grazing land.

But if someone more experienced could ID them just to be sure as I'm new to this hobby. Thanks.

All libs, nice one. When a liberty cap mushroom first emerges, it tends to be moist, and is usually a lovely shade of brown (with a hint of olive green maybe). If conditions are damp and wet, the mushroom cap will likely remain a darker browny colour. But if the rain stops for long enough, the mushroom cap basically dries out somewhat, taking on the ivory-white colour. If the white cap is re-wetted, it will darken to a muddy brown colour with some fleshy colour too, but never quite returns to the browny-green of the freshly emerged mushroom.
They're much easier to spot when at least some have turned white, or are older, more than a couple of days. When freshly emerged and still a browny-green colour, they're very easy to miss, especially when it's raining/windy and visibility is difficult.
As they dry, some caps take on various "two-tone" patterns, especially when very small. The resulting appearance can cause confusion.
By the way, when wet, and certainly when only a day or two old, it's possible to peel the so-called pellicle off the cap, the presence of which is a confirming feature in the identification of psilocybe semilanceata aka libs. The pellicle is basically a translucent one-cell-thick membrane (like the membrane found between layers of an onion) covering the cap. The pellicle is the reason a fresh or wet lib feels slimy. Grab at the edge of the cap with a couple of fingernails and it should lift off. This feature, along with "blueing" (the stem or cap develops a definite blue staining, sometimes almost unnoticeable; not always present, but often occurs after bruising of the stem/cap), and the correct spore-print colour (brownish purple) are the 3 confirming features of liberty caps, when there's any doubt.
Hope this helps.

So eventually after 3 or 4 years of hunting and having to work hard to gather 50-100 libs in a couple of hours, lady luck finally smiled on me. Whilst out hiking in the Comeraghs on Tuesday I came down off the mountain a different way than usual and started noticing libs at my feet, however I had to pick up the young fella from school so couldn’t stop for long but gathered these in about 45 mins.
So I went back up the next morning and had about three hours to spare so go down on hands and knees and explored the wider area and came home with this haul.
Happy Days. God knows I’ve put in the effort scouting wide and far in the south east over the last few years with relatively limited success. Never give up. If you put in the miles, you’ll eventually find your spot, even though I did stumble on mine by accident.

The larger one in your palm is Stropharia semiglobata, found often growing out of dung, and not active. That's one of the first lookalikes to learn to recognise, in this part of the world at least. You've got some libs there surely, eg the smaller one in your palm.
You have to be 100% certain before actually ingesting them...you're on the right track

Unfortunately not, these appear to be Stropharia semiglobata, one of the lookalikes. These are often found in the same conditions as liberty caps, but tend to grow out of dung. The cap is too rounded and tends to be consistent in colour and shape; the stem is thicker, straight and snaps easily - compared to libs. The gills on libs sweep up from the inside edge of the cap, up to close to the top of the stem (aka stipe), whereas with Stropharia semiglobata, the gills run horizontally to the stem (when the mushroom is viewed in an upright position).
What I'm trying to describe is pictured in the top right hand corner of the photo below (a cross section of a lib cap and stem):

Belltropical said: Hey guys, I jus started looking the last few weeks for the first! Jus took the notion or the notion took me I duno!haha found a few on 2 separate days and that took a lota looking, wee micro dose for a few nights, funny how it gets ye then! The white ones are pretty easy to spot it's the darker ones that i bet I've walked past and didn't pick, any tips for reference points or like local texts on it? Cheers (this will be for next year now!?) also when does the season start/finish, all to do with the weather?haha yah green at this <3
Yeah, it seems the main season is at an end where I am, but conditions are still perfect, so I'd love to know is anyone else finding them now? I haven't been out for 5 or 6 days, but it was like there was an abrupt end to them about a week ago now. The thread's gone pretty quiet too, so I suppose that's the reason.
To try and answer your questions, yeah, the partially dry ones are easy to spot. It's just a case of finding the right terrain, finding a few, and then scouring the immediate vicinity for them. Hard to beat down on the hands and knees - it's amazing how much more you'll see. The season seems to be triggered by a sustained period (few days or week) of cool damp weather. I've heard when it sinks to 15C day/10C night in the Autumn, along with plenty of rain - start looking, but I've found something closer to 12/8 a better indication where I am anyway.

Still plenty of libs enjoying the wet weather where I am in the 'sunny' south east. Much harder to spot when wet. Also found what I think is the biggest lib I've ever seen!

Hi There, I'm new to this. Just wondering does anyone know if I've got anything here, and also, if I do, how do I dry them etc.?!
Thanks in advance!

@Nilly the shrooms on the top page are too jumbled up to attempt to identify accurately although many of them appear suspect to me, only the 2 or 3 I’ve circled green appear to be libs.

You second page is a better haul with the shrooms laid out much better and much easier to identify. The ones I have concerns over I’ve circled red. All that said I’m not a trusted identifier but that’s my tuppence worth.
Re drying, I normally lay them out on a sheet of paper, not touching, let them dry at room temp for 48 hours, then give them a jiggle about, then move the sheet to a shelf in my hot press for 3 or 4 days, then in to an adapted Damprid desiccant thingy I got in Homebase for another 4 or 5 days, then they’re cracker dry, then in to a mason jar with a silica pack in it.

Hey, new to this and fortunately came across this page. I've been doing a lot of research into mushrooms, psilisybin and its therapeutic effects. As you all may well know its illegal to possess this stuff.
Unfortunately I know very little about actual picking. Ive watched some youtube videos but it still seems pretty daunting considering there are some that can cause illness and worse.
How would a beginner go about this? Would it be best to accompany someone who has a lot of experience?
Im based in dublin I wouldnt know anyone around these things. I strictly want to do it after reading so many positive things, particularly the research thats going onand clinical trials.
I would prefer to give them a go instead of waiting years for approval in a clinical setting or having to go to amsterdam with a friend.
Would love to hear some feedback and some approaches I could take.
Cheers

Well, if you don't have any IRL friends who are experienced with picking liberty caps, you should hang around here and try to learn the basics of hunting and identifying them. It's still a bit early but read old threads like this one, check the pictures, learn the parameters and what habitats to look in. Then you'll see when people start finding them this coming season, and you'll have plenty of people on here giving you good advice.
Happy hunting and welcome to the Shroomery.

I started the hobby last year, I said I would do all the research and picking myself,
I considered it my journey to get out of the state of mind I was in, took me roughly a month to pinpoint where to look, just look for high ground, with lots of animals, and

Hello guys in 2021. What a crazy year it was. I'm coming to ask if anyone had any luck with hunting in Ireland this year?
I plan to go check around tomorrow. I will report if I find anything.
Peace and love to you all

Howdy folks. Was a member a few years ago but lost the account so made a new one. I think were gonna have some decent rain in Dublin the next few days and I have a decent spot in mind with tons of untouched grassland, mind you ive never picked libs before but have grown GT's from MS a couple times....Looking to get back into the mushies.
The spot i mentioned had none when i checked last so hopefully i get some good luck this weekend. Id rather not run into a million folks picking libs in the mountains of south dublin to be honest 😂.
Do we reckon its still too dry for fruiting atm? Or not cold enough? Cheers

I checked my spots and no luck so far. I'd say it's still to warm, haven't seen even the mushrooms that usually accompany libs.
Have to be patient I'd say It is a pretty warm year, this may be the reason I'm guessing.

Hard to see them properly with a video clip but there are ones there that are definitely NOT liberty caps.
