Help with ID
    #2692184 - 05/17/04 04:20 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

Hey everyone,

I just went hunting and came back with this one shroom that I tend to see pretty often. Im pretty sure its not active, but I would just like to know what mushroom is for further reference. Its totally white with gills which are also white. It was found in Georgia growing from soil with a top layer of rotted leaves. anyone know what this mushroom could be? Any help would be very much appreciated. Here is a pic of the shroom.(The first one is a bit blurry.)

Thx.

We need to see the entire stem, in particular the base of the stem. Hopefully you got the entire stem - there are some mushrooms very similar to that one where the stem extends deep into the soil like a taproot. Another possibility is that there might have been a cuplike structure around the base of the stem - if so, we need to see that for identification.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks for the new photos. They seem to show, unfortunately, that the base of the stem broke off. Without the entire stem base to be sure, that makes this one tougher.

One possibility is that it's one of the all white Amanita species. Since there is some resemblance, you should consider this mushroom DEADLY poisonous. The overall stature is about right for them. Are those traces of a ring up near the top of the stem? If so, that would be more evidence in this direction.

If it is one of the white Amanitas, identification to species requires a microscope to be sure which one. We need to see the spores and basidia to be sure which it is.

They are interesting mushrooms, and make pretty specimens.

Happy mushrooming!

Nope their is no ring towards the top of the stem, near the cap. Ill take your advice for it though about it being an Amanita. My dad actually is a microbiologist/mycologist, but I doubt he would be able to know anything about basidia. He works at a hospital, and he said he works with disease-causing fungus called pathogens and stuff. We have a microscope here that has up to 1,000 X magnification, but I have no clue what I would be looking for. Maybee Ill do it just for fun anywayz. But thanks toxicman for your help, I really apreciate it
 .

-I Agree with Toxic on that one; and without any furthur info i would (in the field) just prematurely label that thing a "Death Cap", without even bothering invest any further time for observations for identification. White gills, white stem, white cap ='s Usually a death-cap, or poisonous (not just poisonous, but deadly-poisonous).
