Problem with growth
    #2692246 - 05/17/04 06:35 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I followed PFTek to the letter, had my cakes incubating at the right temps and whatnot, birthed my cakes at the time where it looked like pics I've seen( around 2-3 weeks ), and the incubation chamber is running with 85-95% humidity, between 70-80 F. And nothing is happening. I have had some cakes in the growth chamber there for 2.5 weeks now and nothing at all happened to them. Some others that have been in for 1.5 weeks look like they are heading for the same fate. The cakes looked like the ones pictured elsewhere in the site when they were birthed. But after a few days in the growth box the cakes seemed dry and crusty. Is there anything that I can do or am doing wrong? I have pictures if it will help. Thanks.

Here are the pictures that I mentioned they were taken a few days ago. This one is from a cake still in the jar that I put in the growing chamber that day,. This is another cake out of the jar from the same batch,. These cakes were put in the growing chamber now about 1.5 weeks ago, . And these were put in now about 2.5 weeks ago, , there's those growth things on top buit they never did anything. It seems like the cakes really dry out after a few days in the growing chamber. Is this normal? Every cake in the pictures here looked like the pic of the cake in the jar when I birthed them. Thanks for any help.

Temps arn't to bad but could be better. Keep the RH in the 90s.

Now did you birth the cakes as soon as they were covered. Very common mistake. There are 3  things that a cake needs to fruit, light, air exchange, and the one where everybody fucks up,  lack of substrate to colonize They need to run out of substrate to fruit right. Now yes they can often fruit if they just have one of these things or we wouldn't get pinning in the jar posts.

What I"m saying is if the cake was birthed just as the outside finished (as I think they were from the photo's) the inside or middle of the cake has to finish colonizing.

The main reason people wait for good looking cakes to pin after weeks in the chamber. Once the cake is done on the outside I like to wait a week for the center to finish.  He he he...not many do we all want our shrooms "right fucken now. "

I only birthed about 1/2 the total number of jars that looked right at the time the other halve stayed in the incubation chamber for another week to check for this. All cakes had at least 2-3 weeks of incubation. Also one of the cakes that were in the batch in for 2.5 weeks looked like it was contaminated (I found out later that it was just bruising) so I pulled it out within the first few days and ripped it in half and it was colonized all the way through. So the temp should be in the 90s or as high as possible in the growth chamber? How long should I wait before I call a batch of cakes a bust? Thanks.

I've found that if I allow the jars to colonize longer, pins were produced much faster - some jars were left in the incubator for 4-5 weeks, and fruited almost immediately. While on the other hand, jars that were fruited immediately after it seemed they were fully colonized took almost 3 weeks to even produce pins - it seems you're just going to have to wait.

So would you say a good time to take the cakes out of the jars is when you see pin heads forming on the cakes inside the jars? My growth chamber stays in the 70s all the time. I have a ultra sonic humidifier set up and my humidity gauges were reading HI all the time so I thought I might have the humidity to high. I vented the growth chamber (by keeping one corner of the lid open) and now the humidity is usually 85-90. Should I put the lid back on and have the humidity at HI? What do I look for in a over-humidified growth chamber? Thanks.

no, cakes work best near 100% humidity. the better the seal, the better the cakes will be keep humidity as high as you can get it and temps around 75
