Hmm,

Today i took some of this white mold/mycel up with sterilized gloves and smelt it..
It smells EXACTLY like when you go into the forest and pick random mushroom, tear it apart and then smell it. Or almost like a store bought button mushroom... Have to be mushroom mycelium right!?
Or still mold? :frown:

Guess i will see very soon but i cant stop thinking about it lol.

I go these white dots that are clumping and the tub doesn’t smell great, is it a goner?

Looks like the start of trich... if it starts to turn green toss it’s right away! Keep it away from any other tubs if you have any.

Edit: also doesn’t look like you covered your grains with a 1/4 inch top layer. It’s recommended to do that.

I buried the tub, my first, in my garden. This spawn was the same strain from 5 different jars which were my under performers. I took the strongest ones to g2g and they are doing well. Still have a few dubs.

I’m using BODS un-modified TEK and he say he doesn’t usually use a top layer, you think I should??

I've got some contam on a couple of agar plates. I don't have any more,so transferring the good Mycelium isn't possible. I've wondered why, when there is localized contam, one does not just cut out the contam and let the mycelium continue to colonize the agar it started with?

Bod doesn’t like top layers but I think they are great at spawn. Covers your grains in a nice blanket so they don’t dry out fast.

How did you knock up your jars? Hopefully agar... if you did spores to grain you’re more than 90% more likely to have contams somewhere along the line.

I stared with spores to agar in June and made 5 transfers then went to grain. I have two dubs with out a top layer and I’m going to make another two today and I will top layer these and compare.

Thanks for the responses!

Sounds like you are on the right track. Hopefully I get to see your comparison when it’s all said and done.

You’re welcome!

Edit: also make sure to tamp down your sides tight so it eliminates side pins and you’ll get a nice canopy hopefully.

Can anyone lend me a hypothesis? It looks like I've got the same mold growing IN my sterilized grain jars and on my MEA. MEA was done w/spore prints or swabs and jars were spore syringes. All products were from different vendors (swabs, prints, syringe, mea). Jars Pc'd @15psi for 90min. Idk where I'm going wrong with my sterile methods. I use an SAB, flame sterilize the loops & needles, alcohol wipe everything, etc. How tf does this stuffbget INTO a pc'd jar?

Spores, swabs, and syringes are ALL dirty due to the way they are made regardless of vendor. If you read how to make a spore print, spore syringe, or swab, you'll see that they're all created in open air and will contain some sort of contamination. This is why most people who graduate past PF tek will always use agar.

If you're using spore prints and swabs you almost have to use agar.

If you're using syringes (from a really good vendor) you can get away with using them for PF tek, but that's about it.

Brown rice flour (the main nutrition in PF tek) is really good at fighting off contamination and allowing the myc to overun contamination, so it's recommended that you start there. You can even make BRF pucks which are a good starting point for agar.

Edit: Missed the part where you were already using agar. Keep on trying to put spores to agar and eventually you will get some myc. It's a lot cheaper than wasting grain. You could get lucky on the first plate, but it's not uncommon to go through 20 germination plates to finally get something that's good enough to transfer.

TLDR:
The contamination could be from the spores, or from sterile technique. There's no way to tell but the more you do the more you can eliminate variables and start seeing results.

This is the part I was missing and needed to hear 😂 I did figure it was necessary to isolate myc but this mold grew so fast I thought there would be more to isolate. Learning as I go.

https://files.shroomery.org/files/20-37/955774675-20200908_103522.jpg

I have tried wild pan cyan spores  to pre poured MEA.

Wet looking blobs formed after a couple of days and I assumed contamination. Now after a couple more days, I can see fine "Fingers" growing outwards when the dish is held up to a light.

Wishful thinking or could there be some mycelium growth?

That's cool.

So is it probable that its a contam aswell as myc?

It doesn't look like any of the photos I have seen of healthy myc. This is what it initially looked like

One of the plates was left on its side for a couple of days and the "blob" flowed down to edge.

dont need ID but... got a nice little subcoprophilia on my manure spawned cubes. Kinda cute. It pushed itself out of the manure. Somehow survived pasteurization. So the first pin is after 4 days.:mushroom2:
