New Martha Tent Build, Seeking Advice
    #26920970 - 09/06/20 11:04 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hey, all.  I grew magic mushrooms on cakes using this site while in college 15 years ago.  Just decided to get back into growing, and invested about $350 into this Martha Tent setup.  I was hoping to get some feedback on it from the community.  Currently, I only have a pretty spent mono-tub in there, but I have grain spawn bags of B+, Puerto Rican, Lions Mane, Blue and Pink Oyster, and Black Morel, all colonizing at the moment.  I really want to get the environment dialed in by the time those are ready to fruit, probably 4-8 weeks from now.

Here are the highlights:

Enclosure:  A basic 4-tier greenhouse bought off Amazon.

Humidity:  Inkbird humidity regulator set at 92% with a 3% differential, so it kicks on at 89%, running a 4L reptile humidifier.  The humidifier is on a shelf above the setup and run to a network of 1-inch PVC piping, which is zip-tied to the structure and has holes drilled throughout to allow for even distribution of the fog.

Temperature:  Inkbird temp controller is set at 74F with a 1 degree differential so it kicks on at 73F.  It powers a heated seed mat, which sits under a small tray of perlite on the bottom shelf of the greenhouse.

Free Air Exchange:  There are 2 computer fans with custom mounts, one pushing air out of the top into an exhaust port that empties into my second-story attic, and the other pulling fresh air from the closet through a cheap air filter and into the bottom of the tent.  Both fans are set to run for 1 minute every half hour.  According to the CFM rating on the fans, this should be enough to provide at least one full air exchange every hour.

So, a few things worth noting right off the bat:

Humidity seems to work great.  The fans kick on twice an hour, and bring the humidity down to ~80%, which quickly returns to >92% in less than 5 minutes.  I'm not sure if this up and down swing will work against me or not.  I've thought about only running the fans for 30 seconds at a time instead of 60 seconds.  This would lead to less of a humidity drop.  Also, I'm not sure how much FAE I really need with this setup.  Any advice on that would be appreciated.

Temperature control is not great.  That seed heating mat just doesn't do much at all to raise the temps.  I only really need to heat it a few degrees to get from an ambient temp of around 72F to a more optimal fruiting temp.  Any advice on a better way to accomplish this would also be appreciated.

Finally, I'm wondering how my humidity lines will hold up over time.  Given that I have about 8 feet of 1-inch PVC running through the tent, am I inviting contamination in the lines?  Should I expect to have to clean the interior of that piping every couple of months?  Any thoughts on potential gotchas on the fogger lines would also be appreciated.

That's about it for now.  Thanks in advance for any comments/advice!

I did think of one other question regarding lighting.  The closet has a light fixture in the ceiling.  I was thinking of just using that, but there is a shelf in between it and the tent, and the tent itself isn't totally transparent, as it has the green stripping to reinforce the plastic.  It would be easy enough to mount something inside the tent, but I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the trouble at this point ...

Okay, cool, so lighting is easy enough.

Do you ever clean your humidification line?  If so, how do you go about doing it?

Also, what's the fan up top doing exactly?

I’ve found heating the room itself vs. using a seeding mat is optimal, and run my fan for 5 minutes every 4 hours seems to be sufficient FAE. I like the pvc lines you have, though haven’t built them myself just yet. 😉👍☠️🍄

You should do some pans or something with that setup. Super overkill for cubes.

I think I'll do that ... Will probably order the 4-pack of pans syringes from sporeworks and give it a go after my current crop runs out.

Definitely.  I'm trying to take it slow, but I want to make sure I have the tent set up ready to go when my spawn is colonized.  Then I'd like to get into agar culturing, but I'm struggling to find a good tek for that.  I found a couple good ones for liquid culture, but they start with clean agar plates.  Gotta figure out how to make that happen first if I really want to nerd out and become self-sufficient, right?

I just mix agar with light dry malt extract 50/50. I use 40g of the that mix with 1 liter of water. Sterilze for 30 min @15 psi then pour plates. That amount pours about 40 plates.

ya monotubs is where its at for cubes not only may that set be overkill it will also most likely be counter productive as ur gnna spend an awful lot of time tryin to get shit dialed in. setups like that are great for pans and other exotics tho but i honestly can say you will not beat the performance and ease of a monotub👍
