I think the expectation is off and the set and setting are probably off if cannabis seems unpleasant.
Anecdote: A good friend welcomed us into their house when our NYC hotel caused allergy reactions in my wife a few years back during my temporary relocation to the big apple for a computer contract at a bank. ONE toke smoked in his cigarette styled one hitter chillum and I went to the usual strobing awareness.
The residual anxiety - from driving 600 miles - having to go to work tomorrow at new job, and wife in the throes of an allergy event set me up to have a difficult choppy experience. It was a lot of extra work to get up to the 3rd floor bedroom and perform quiet ablutions and get into the bed. The extra effort was exhausting on top of exhaustion, so basically the thinnest part of my remaining consciousness was bothered by being stoned on weed - and if I think about it all previous problems were physical and pressure related as in the "pressures" of life and social obligations - not air pressure.
I think we need to re-examine our lives when we find that we can no longer enjoy something that we did once before. Not that we have to love pot, but is it not strange that we can stop loving what we did love? It did not really change that much although it used to smell divine, and now I just don't want any smell at all. I used to like incense too, but that went away with scented candles; now I don't like any additional strong smells.
I am delighted with some smell-less BC Bubble Hash that has crept into the supply chain in Canada. Looks like Kief, smokes to a white gray wisp of ash. perfect in a one hitter ~35% thc.

I like to smoke a little on the LSD comedown, mushrooms, coke, or etc...I used to smoke it during the peak of these things, but now I just like it after the initial trip.

I spent two 2 year stretches off cannabis, just cuz i was 100% sober at the time, and when I picked it back up it was like magic. I certainly am susceptible to anxiety and rumination and weird feelings physically on cannabis but I've learned much of it is what RGV described....its a dose and set and setting type thing for me.
Cannabis is used in society very casually but for me it is still a very powerful substance I have to respect and be mindful with. I do small dabs of rosin and hash oil and find there to be a threshold between a comfortable hash high and being way too stoned. It was harder to navigate that as well when I first started back up again 4 years ago.
I also have found I prefer to use it by myself or around people I trust and am very comfortable with. Also, not having any major stresses or responsibilities for the day before consuming helps me relax a bit.
I do agree there is a tolerance thing to it tho...I do smoke daily.
I find cannabis helps me stay in my lane and feel a bit more at peace in this crazy world. My head often often spinning a bit without it
But yeah, I fuckin love weed tbh

Haven't read anything else yet.
Just came to say that I hate cannabis. It makes me feel like shit, disconnected from people, and paranoid. Like the opposite of shrooms (aside from occasional paranoia).
Weed sucks.

To slow down in general from life? Meditate 20 mins twice a day, no caffeine, deep breaths/outdoor breaks. If I can't slow down I look into why and heal that motherfucker. I'm a "no band-aids" kind of person.

This is a very good point. I often find that I'm a bit more lax with set and setting when it comes to cannabis than I am with, say, psilocybin or LSD. That may also factor into my negative experiences.

I think the no caffeine aspect indicates that your lifestyle may be prone to panic, but you are riding it out with breath-breaks and refocusing. I think it's a phase. I went through one like this when my kids were small. just some acid and wine maybe.

yea, I turn into a stressed asshole that can't focus when I'm on caffeine for more than 2 days so I gave it up. I have anxiety and depression issues, but I attribute that to childhood traumas that I'm in the process of healing with a shrink. I quit alcohol too, I think I'm intolerant. Takes me days to recover from 1 stupid drink no matter what it is. It's too bad, I love altering my mind when I can. Damn I miss coffee.

We are not the feelings and sensations within the body, we are the witness to them. Practicing non identifying with anything that is "yours" the attachment to a "you" is the root of all suffering. Once you start spectating from your conscious awareness you no longer embody feelings as yourself. People prone to anxiety/panic are contractors rather than expanders. Let yourself expand, understand your bodies sensitivities

I got the aeropress coffee thing mastered. it's as good as cannabis, but just for mornings, haha
life itself will be healing to life, your life will become the practice, and sometimes you will enjoy coffee and cannabis and it will be great.
there is no final healing, just a way of going forward that heals as much as it rends apart.

i love caffeine and weed. they synergise well and are the only two drugs that i can abuse almost endlessly without any further complication..
i used to get anxiety and paranoia from weed and i still do. i think i learned to enjoy that part. i like the soft dopamine rush in the beginning and the slightly dissociating effects it provides. without cannabis, i'd be more active, extraverted and optimistic but less cautious and probably more annoying too. i took my breaks but in the end i prefer life with the herb.
meditating regularly and practicing non identification is a good idea

In my early 20s cannabis got very intense for me to a point where I simply had to stop because of the bad side effects like anxiety and paranoia. THC side effects are among the worst drug experiences I ever had and that includes stimulants and psychedelics with their bad trips and paranoia.
So nowadays 15 years or so later I enjoy small amounts maybe 100mg of weed in a pure pipe and work myself up from there with zero problems. High CBD strains also seem to work well or even extra CBD oil under the tongue. If anything else fails I lightly chew black pepper corns which really works to ease weed anxiety. There is some science behind that and why it works (terpenes or whatever).
Less is more, don't smoke as much as the other morons who are probably wired differently than you on top of their acquired tolerance. I really think there is also a genetic component that explains why some people don't enjoy weed as much as others.

In my younger days, I'm pretty sure I was stoned most of the time, haha. I did reach a point where I needed to stop, but now I use it medicinally and it's super helpful. I have a different respect for it these days too, but that might also be because of the mushrooms lol.
I can, however, totally see how people wouldn't enjoy the effects of it. Especially when combined with psychedelics. For me, I will smoke a large doob after the peak to relaunch into another dimension. Usually it feels like a more intense but also more relaxed second-peak. But I also know that some people can't deal with weed/shrooms, which is a bummer because I think it's fun :P

one think I don't like is the feeling I get the next day in my upper air passages, I think the cilia are suffering in the tissue exposed to the smoke.
I have tried oral THC but it is not the same bang, it's more of a sleepy psychedelic with very slow onset. For that (slow onset) I would prefer lsd - less sleepy.

The title question of this thread is just another thing that makes me question why people like alcohol?
Weed in my view is more pro active than what alcohol is.. Shit just destroys lives/families and others around them. weed does non of that and the affects are way more forgiving than what alcohol can do to your body. So why not enjoy weed??? It is a hard question because everybody is different and has their own vices to cope with things if you will, and of course to have a enjoyable time.. I have had ups and downs with weed (especially after taking a fair amount of psychedelics). Takes me a little longer to get back into the routine of smoking a lot after dosing psychedelics. It is like it makes the weed super strong, but in reality it is your system being sensitive to the weed after all the psychedelics.
I enjoy blazing daily, it is part of my routine and I don't see myself stopping in the next 30 or so years.

alcohol may break up families because the alcoholic is unreliable and may get violent and mean. weed can break up families when one partner is into it and seems checked out, this can be interpreted as emotional cruelty.
I'm not kidding. it's happening
