AGAR: monocultures, are they worth it?

So, I was reading through a really great write up, Stro's Cleaning and Isolation and he showed how to isolate down to a true monoculture, something that looks fun to do and really interesting to me, but is it worth it? and is it even beneficial?
I was thinking that when fruiting you might benefit from a few different cultures in the tub but I have no idea. Anyone here have any thoughts on the matter?

I would say if you haven't heard of the benefits of agar, you need to do some more reading on this site. You started at a great read though, going through Stro's was one of the posts that got me really interested in agar and on my way to starting it off.
To answer your question, agar is worth every single penny and ounce of effort.
Benefits:
-Clean cultures #1 best and foremost only reason anyone does agar. -Prevents you from wasting time hoping MS syringe gets you something fruitable. -Lets you make clones of best fruits that you produce, and lets you recreate that over and over. -Shows where bacteria may be present, otherwise un-discovered. -Allows you to post your agar porn. -Is rewarding as fuck once you get it down and gives you self satisfaction.
And lastly,
-CLEAN CULTURES, again.
Oh and also having multiple cultures in one tub is not useful, unless you are attempting to make an attempt and hybridizing them. Which I wouldn't recommend starting out. Generally only one of the mycellium from one of the cultures will win out.

I'm no expert, but here's my opinion.
It's time consuming, and you don't really know if what you're isolating is worth isolating until you're done. It would be great to get an isolate that's potent, high yielding and grows fast, but all we usually know for sure is that we started out by cloning a nice looking mushroom.
People say MS is a crapshoot, but I think it's consistent for potency, because we eat quite a few shrooms, and any differences average out. I do cloning but no longer try to isolate. I get a lot of variability in terms of size and weight from one batch to another, but I think it's caused by substrate conditions, and not genetics.

OP didn`t ask for agar in general, but for monocultures. You want a monoculture to get consistent results. That`s a lot of agar work and lots of transfers from sectors to get on agar. And you want to test them, not all sectors may fruit.
My way is taking a clone, i sometimes get a monoculture already. When starting with multispore, you`ll have countless different strains rubbing their shoulders in the tub, which isn`t bad at all. Take a clone from there, and you`re in the game

Arr ok, interesting. I'm currently growing out from spore on agar and was wondering if I should try and isolate and section, but after reading this I think its probably best to just clean it up and grow and maybe clone from the best-looking mushrooms, possibly.

Thanks for the reply. yer as I mentioned above I was thinking that multiple genetics might be beneficial as must give you a bell curve of all the different traits.
Can I ask you how do you select a mushroom to clone? obviously you have no idea of potency until tested. Do you know of a good write up to read on the subject? I haven't searched this yet. your answer just brought it up in my mind.

It's up to you. Clone an early pinner, a big monster shroom, a nice cluster leader, a mutant, what ever you want.
