I’m in the same boat as you, lol I looked back and last message was 2010. I feel your pain, a lot has changed but more simplified. I’ve been following Bod’s TEKs just because I like the simplicity. But read through a ton of others like mixing substrate in a trash bag with spawn. If you want a liner kill two birds with one stone.

Yeah I'm doing bod's stupid simple shoebox tek right now but the one shoebox looks like its about to fail. It's been in fruiting conditions for 2 weeks now and has no pins whatsoever and is bruised to shit with yellow metabolites all over it. That's a mexicube species. I have a PE shoebox too and I'm praying that it will work and not get fucked up like the other one...I really don't see what I did wrong, and that's the frustrating part.

Dang that’s rough, you keeping logs? Even if you do a journal grow for yourself it can help sort some issues when you revisit.

It's BRF and I don't believe so. What would you be looking for? I remember almost exactly how they looked.

People seemed to not be able to answer my question about sufficient lighting either. I used to use LED's all of the time but I rushed into this without having the lights I like to use and I have these in a closet on a rack that's on the side of the well and there are just 2 fluorescent lightbulb's like you would see at a store just smaller inside with that plastic covering over it of course. Oh and the mini-mono is in an entirely different location and has an LED sitting on top of it 12/12

From what I understood the only real lighting that seemed more beneficial was 6500k daylight. But there’s a lot of pro lighting threads and lot that say it doesn’t matter. 12 on 12 off, any light should do. Hop on amazon and get some 6500k led bulbs, it will definitely be bright haha. 120w equivalents are strong. For my grow area I ended up getting shop lights with standard tubes, 65k. I do remember reading something that lead me to that decision. As far as colonizing I have some stuff in the dark some in the light and some 50/50 to see if i notice any effects in this part of the stage. Haven’t noticed any difference honestly but I started with ms.

Yeah I always see mixed opinions on here and everywhere else. I guess whatever works for the grower. I just haven't had any truly successful bulk grows other than 1 tiny shoebox of PE's that I got maybe 7g out of total lol. It caught trich right before the 2nd flush.

I've had success with cakes, but I want a bigger yield. I am also in no position to test agar yet although I very much want to and even have a friend who can teach me in person.

I would post a picture of my setup with the light involved, but the pictures are making the light look way brighter than it is.

Agar actually isn’t that hard I promise. I just did a run of 20 and I fucked up a couple but got several ones with some good myc growth. I just used a still air box. Go to your local brew supply store, grab some light malt extract for like $5, if you have an Asian food place can get agar agar for less than a buck and dishes are cheap online but you don’t have to use Petri dishes. Bod has some great videos of agar work, SAB work. It literally takes 1 drop from a ms syringe to get them going that’s how I did mine. Check out pastywhytes tek and bods tek. Its taking me a little to learn but I’m the end it’s going to save me a ton of headache. Are far as the flushes go that will help even better.

Edit: just had a thought if you don’t have a pressure cooker you can get like a 6 quart pressure cooker at Walmart.com. Cheap pc just needs to be big enough to pc the jar you have agar in. All the presto PC have 15psi weights I found from research. Even the little ones.

:whathesaid: what's holding you back from agar? Thats the true game changer.

I would be looking for signs of bacteria, and give an overall grain prep check

Several different personal reasons are holding me back from it yet. I'm not intimidated by it at this point, I used to be though. Once those personal reasons resolve I will more than likely start doing this.

Update:

Pulled 2 sucker's out each weighing around 2.5grams

Lots of little knots and white dots on the surface of the substrate but not many pins. Any reason for this?

Surface conditions are better. It’s probably more humid under the liner with better air since it’s closer to the holes.

The surface looks good though, super level.

Thanks brother! Anyway to get the sub itself to start pinning? There are many knots. More FAE?

Also, if my liner weren't so sloppy, would they be more inclined to fruit from the sub?

1st flush is about done, should get an Oz dry all said and done with the first flush. Once it is, should I take out the substrate and dunk it after rinsing off as many of the spores as I can that dropped? Or should I bottom water? If so, how would I do that with a liner attached to the sub? Or does it just need an extremely heavy misting?

I would mist well, wait for pins to show, then bottom water between the lines and sub

Oh really? Why bottom water if the sub is pinning? fruits taking all the moisture?

Bottom watering is most beneficial when the pins are about a cm tall, that's when they bed the water the most

Okay cool thanks man, hey would you mind checking out my "not pinning yet" post. It might not be called that exactly, but it's the most recent besides this one and one other I believe. I could use your input on it

So my PE shoebox finally started pining. I looked in today and saw a few little guys along with a little bit of an older guy in there I'm not sure how I missed him last night when I did a misting haha. Not sure if it was just timing or if me putting the lid on it in place of the grocery bag helped at all. Leaning towards that since the other Mexicube shoebox had a grocery bag and went bad pretty quickly.

Same thing is happening with this as the mini-mono of brazillians I have going too. The fruits are all happening on the sides. In this case it's happening between the liner and the substrate. I hope they'll work their way up instead of down as some of them are angled downward at the moment, I don't want to have to destroy or mess up the substrate by picking them when they're ready.

Still many knots on the surface but no action yet like the sides. I think it's because I can't keep the right moisture on the surface whereas the liner and sub have more water droplets than the surface which dries out extremely fast.

I did find this link https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17736027

For anyone experiencing the same issues I am with substrate drying too quickly even when field capacity is correct, I haven't tried it yet but it makes perfect sense and earlier today before I read this I thought about putting a plastic liner on the top since the fruits obviously like those conditions. I just wonder if it's too late at this point to put it on. Maybe I will test it on the 2nd flush and see if that makes a difference.

Anybody ever tried this?
